Job Summary
The Roy lab at the Moran Eye Center at University of Utah is seeking a Lab Technician. The lab is involved in research on the cell-type specific functions in the retina and how these functions are impaired in retinal diseases. We use a variety of genetic, physiological, imaging and computational tools, and animal models, to perform these studies. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and experience of at least 2 years working in a laboratory setting using techniques such as microscopy, immunohistochemistry, electrophysiology. Responsibilities
Order supplies, reagents, materials for lab.
Maintain digital and paper records of lab purchases, SOPs, lab safety documents and research protocols.
Perform routine lab tasks including cleaning/sterilization of tools, chemical and biological waste disposal, shipping and receiving of reagents and specimens.
Assist in building and maintaining laboratory and scientific equipment. Troubleshoot problems with equipment by conferring with senior lab personnel and the PI.
Perform specialized tests and procedures such as tissue preparation, confocal imaging.
Assist in preparation and performing of one or more of these procedures: small animal surgeries, multielectrode array experiments, collection of biological specimens for laboratory analysis, molecular biology ( IHC , IF, in-situ hybridization).
Conduct literature reviews to obtain information for procedures and experiments.
Participate in lab meetings.
May coordinate with animal care specialists and veterinarians for monitoring status of animals in colony.
Work environment:
- Exposure to mice, tree shrews
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances.
Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required.
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences
Responsible, collaborative and communicative.
Experience with IHC , mouse colony, tissue dissection.
