Job Summary:

The University of Utah is now accepting applications in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for the position of Assistant Athletics Director for Digital and Creative Media. Utah is a NCAA Division I school and a member of the Big 12 Conference. Under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for devising, implementing and managing the strategy, vision and direction of the Digital and Creative Media unit, comprising the areas of creative video, photography, social media and graphic design for Utah’s 20-sport athletics program. The position will oversee and manage the staff in those areas, and will be the primary liaison between the Digital and Creative Media department and sport programs, coaches and staff in the areas of creative vision and maintaining brand consistency; interface and collaborate directly with other external revenue-driving units and campus partners regarding the production and distribution of content across multiple digital and social media platforms; and manage the Digital and Creative Media budget. Additional responsibilities include cross-departmental communication and planning to maximize revenue generation, seeking innovative ways to increase storytelling opportunities, fan engagement and brand enhancement.

Job Description:

The Assistant A.D. for Digital and Creative Media will be responsible for overseeing and managing the Digital and Creative Media department, to include the planning, creation and distribution of creative content across all digital and social media platforms for Utah’s 20 sport programs, under the direction of the Sr. Associate A.D. for Strategic Communications. As a member of the department’s senior staff, the position will devise, implement and manage the strategy, vision and direction of the Digital & Creative Media unit to align with athletics department priorities and content strategies that promote Utah’s athletics programs and student-athletes, and support departmental revenue-generating goals.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the staff that comprises the areas of creative video, photography, social media and graphic design for Utah’s 20-sport athletics program, with direction from the Senior Assoc. A.D. for Strategic Communications;

  • Contribute to the overall vision and goals of Utah Athletics by shaping the digital strategy, to include the development and execution of storytelling, brand-building and fan-engagement content for distribution across the department’s social and digital channels;

  • Create and deliver on video and content production calendars, accessible by multiple stakeholders, working with the director of creative video, director of photography, director of art and graphic design, and director of social media & digital strategy;

  • Apply strategic methods to constructing annual budget that combine fiscally-responsible decisions with long-term vision for investment in equipment to stay at the forefront of emerging media and content production;

  • Establish methods of planning communications and rhythm of meetings to produce the most robust content stream to effectively tell the story and elevate the brand of Utah Athletics;

  • Serve as project lead on the social media and content plans for departmental campaigns and initiatives, communicating effectively with all partners and stakeholders;

  • Collaborate with key partners, including campus departments, Utah Utes Partnerships and official apparel provider to explore additional revenue-generating opportunities and innovative strategies;

  • Work closely with Assistant A.D. for Communications and communications staff to develop strategic messaging and unique methods for engaging fans, media and prospective student-Maintain regular communication and planning schedules with the ticket office, Crimson Club, development, marketing and Elevate U staff to support ticket sales, attendance and fundraising initiatives and identify new revenue-generating opportunities;

  • Attend and contribute to sport-specific content planning meetings, and guide digital and creative staff in managing those relationships with sport-program creative staff to integrate into the program’s social strategy and vision;

  • Develop and launch quarterly or other periodic series of education sessions for coaches and staff on best practices and topics in social and digital media;

  • Maintain industry standards for creative content, equipment, capabilities and workflows to position Utah Athletics in the strongest light with its visual content;

  • Advise the department on social and digital media opportunities that help maximize student-athlete NIL engagement and earnings, and enhance the department’s support of student-athlete NIL ;

  • Amplify and elevate the Utah Athletics brand locally and nationally;

  • Ensure consistency in brand guidelines and messaging related to content and posting;

  • Create and deliver effective and visually-appealing daily, weekly and annual analytics reports for internal use, as well as providing to sponsors and partners to fulfill and enhance future opportunities;

  • Attend Utah Athletics events;

  • Develop departmental strategies consistent with the assigned department’s continuous quality improvement program;

  • Ensure competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through on-going staff performance evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4-6 years of experience in Creative Media Services, and progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop staff members and to ensure the smooth operation of the department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in digital and creative media production, and social media strategy

  • Compliance with NCAA , Big 12 and University of Utah policies and procedures

  • Ability to travel with teams

  • Strong communication skills and effective sense of teamwork and collaboration

  • Extensive knowledge of and familiarity with the creation of content inherent to the areas of supervision

  • Expertise in developing and applying effective systems for utilizing Photoshelter to manage the department’s digital assets and power the delivery of content across platforms

  • Ability to strategize, shoot and produce digital content for multiple social media and online media platforms to generate engagement and positively publicize Utah Athletics

  • Experience working within an intercollegiate athletics program or professional sports franchise, and ideally experience within an NCAA Division I college football program

  • Experience in other multi-media production platforms (web sites, animation, graphic design) desired.

  • Knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite required.

Preferences

Technological expertise in digital and creative content production, including motion graphics; strong knowledge of various social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat) as well as digital asset management ( DAM ) systems, certified drone pilot desired; considerable initiative, creativity, flexibility, efficiency, independence and love of sports.
