Title of Job: Deputy Sheriff - Entry Level (Non-certified) Department: Wicomico County Sheriffs Office

Job Summary: Responsible for maintaining law and order within Wicomico County. Answer emergency and routine calls for service from the public, arrest criminal offenders, serve court orders and enforce Maryland criminal and traffic laws. This is an entry level/training position.

Essential Functions: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Ensure the safety and welfare of the citizens of Wicomico County and the State of Maryland. Enforce the criminal, traffic and civil laws of Wicomico County, State of Maryland and the United States. Provide court security and transport prisoners. Respond to emergency calls for service from the public, both emergency and routine. Patrol area of assignment to detect suspicious activity. Serve warrants and civil documents. Prepare legal documents, such as citations, statement of charges, application for warrants, etc. Present evidence and give testimony in District and Circuit Courts. Compile information, keep records, and prepare reports on enforcement activities. Enforce traffic laws and issue citations and warnings. Enforce criminal laws and make physical custody arrests. Work with other law enforcement agencies on mutual problems and in emergency situations. Investigate criminal complaints and conduct criminal investigations. Investigate traffic accidents. Perform security checks of private and public property. Maintain all assigned equipment, uniforms and vehicle. Perform other law enforcement work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Knowledge of Maryland Criminal and Traffic law. Knowledge of accepted law enforcement procedures and techniques. Ability to mediate disputes in a fair, impartial manner. Ability to exercise decisiveness and a readiness to make decisions or render judgments. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Ability to successfully complete training as mandated by the Maryland Police Training Commission in order to attain certification.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education. Experience and/or training in law enforcement not required, but is preferred.

Physical and Environmental Conditions: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related and specialized law enforcement equipment. Must meet the minimum physical requirements of the Maryland Police Training Commission for sworn officers.

Special Requirements: Must reach 21 st birthday by the time of appointment to Deputy Sheriff. Possess a valid drivers license. Successful completion of agency background investigation, including a polygraph examination or VSA. Must successfully pass a medical, physical, and psychological evaluation.
