SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and duties in the construction, installation, maintenance, renewal and repair of City Water Resource utilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITICS:

This is the first level of a three tier job group. It is distinguished from the next higher level by the absence of the ability to perform skilled and advanced water resource maintenance duties. This position reports to the Water Resource Field Supervisor. Follows direction from Lead Water Resource Operators and Water Resource II Operators when assigned as a helper specific to the task at hand.

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled, manual duties in the maintenance, repair and construction of City properties, including water, wastewater and reclaimed water structures and systems while assigned to one or more divisions.
  • Assists in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of water, wastewater and reclaimed water systems.
  • Assists in the removal of old pipe and the laying of new pipelines, mains, services and hydrants. Assists in the installation of water meters and repair.
  • Digs and fills trenches manually or using light equipment. Learns to operate medium vehicles and equipment under supervision.
  • Transports structures and equipment within the water, wastewater and reclaimed water systems as assigned.
  • Completes daily electronic work orders and activities logs when assigned.
  • Responds to emergency and off hour situations as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
  • One (1) year work experience in the general construction or maintenance field;or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to obtain a Valid State of Arizona Drivers License (Class B) with Tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire. (Required to retain employment.)

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic construction, maintenance and repair procedures, practices and methods used within the plumbing industry.
  • Knowledge of local topography and geography.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices including OSHA shoring specifications and sloping regulations.
  • Skill in operating light equipment, vehicles, and specialized tools.
  • Skill in understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Skill in determining appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

  • Work is routinely performed in an outdoor environment, subject to driving to conduct work, seasonal heat, and cold and extreme weather conditions.
  • Subject to noise from equipment operation.
  • Subject to dust, odors, dirt, oil/grease, gases, vapors, working around and with machinery having moving parts, working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber, working below the surface, and working at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, running and occasionally lifting heavy objects up to 100 pounds.
