The Vice President of Taxation is responsible for shaping the future of Casella Waste Systems, Inc. by leading our tax strategy, implementing efficient tax systems, supporting mergers and acquisitions activities, and ensuring successful tax-focused post-acquisition integration, including all aspects of state and federal tax compliance, planning, and reporting, as well as managing indirect taxes. Additionally, this role will involve tax diligence and modeling for potential acquisition targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements tax strategies to minimize the company\'s state and federal tax liabilities while ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Oversees the preparation and filing of all state and federal tax returns, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Stays abreast of changes in tax laws and regulations that may impact the company and advises senior management of potential implications and opportunities.
  • Monitors and assesses the company\'s overall tax risk profile, identifying areas of potential exposure and implementing appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Prepares and presents tax-related reports and presentations to senior management and the board of directors as necessary.
  • Leads all tax-related aspects of acquisitions, including due diligence, assessing tax implications and opportunities, modeling transactions and negotiating tax-related terms.
  • Oversee the integration of acquired companies into the existing corporate hierarchy, optimizing tax efficiency and compliance.
  • Leads and mentors a team of tax professionals providing support and guidance to ensure compliance of all state and federal tax laws and regulations.
  • Collaborates with other departments, including but not limited to finance, legal, IT, and operations, to address tax-related issues and opportunities across the organization.
  • Manages and provides leadership to team members by effectively communicating, establishing clear goals and objectives, coaching team members on achieving goals, and ensuring access to training and development opportunities that assist employees in attaining the necessary skills to achieve team and corporate results.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, products, sales, and services and performs any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.
  • Ensures compliance with all company, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws regarding employment and employee safety.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a bachelors degree in accounting, finance or a related field. A minimum of 15years of progressive leadership experience, tax planning, compliance, and reporting, with a focus on state and federal taxation.Proven track record of successfully managing tax audits and inquiries, preferably within a multi-jurisdictional public company.The ideal candidate will have a strong background in tax law, extensive knowledge of tax regulations, exceptional leadership abilities, and experience in mergers and acquisition activities. A CPA certification or equivalent professional qualification is required. Familiarity with Coupa and Netsuite as well as a Master of Taxation, JD, or MBA is preferred.
