International High-Voltage Battery - Cell Technical Specialist in Rochester Hills, Michigan

Position Overview

Our ePowertrain Team is expanding, and we are excited to offer a unique opportunity for a High-Voltage Battery - Cell Technical Specialist. As a skilled engineer specializing in cell assembly and battery chemistries, you will play a key role in driving the quality, performance, and reliability of NMC, LFP, and emerging cell chemistries within the commercial vehicle industry.

In this position, you will oversee the technical aspects of battery cell assembly, track quality metrics, collaborate with suppliers, and support Value Creation Teams (VCTs) to optimize assembly processes and ensure compliance with the highest industry standards. Your expertise will be vital in maintaining strong relationships with cell suppliers, resolving assembly challenges, and ensuring the delivery of safe, reliable, and high-performance battery solutions.

This position will involve collaboration with our TRATON partners using Lean-Agile methodology, working closely with global teams to co-develop innovative solutions and integrate externally sourced battery technologies.

Location: Hybrid role based in Rochester Hills, MI; Lisle, IL; or San Antonio, TX.

Responsibilities

  • Cell Assembly Oversight: Lead the technical oversight of localized NMC and LFP cell assembly processes, ensuring adherence to specifications, quality standards, and performance requirements.NMC & LFP Chemistry Expertise: Utilize experience and in-depth knowledge of NMC & LFP chemistry to optimize cell assembly processes and ensure compatibility with application requirements.

  • Redundancy Planning: Develop and implement redundancy strategies to ensure continuity of cell supply and production output.

  • Verification, Certification, and Testing Support: Utilizing lean-agile methodology, work as a highly productive member of a global Value Creation Team (VCT) to provide technical support, ensuring thorough validation and certification of NMC and LFP cell performance and reliability. Help generate localized validation plans, ensure they are properly executed, process and analyze results, identify anomalies, and compare against the global dataset.

  • Quality Metrics Tracking: Establish and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for cell assembly quality, tracking metrics to identify trends, issues, and improvement opportunities.

  • Supplier Interface: Serve as the primary interface with NMC and LFP cell suppliers in the North American Region (NAR), collaborating on assembly processes, quality assurance, quantity requirements, cost, and technical needs.

  • On-site Supplier Support: Provide on-site technical support at supplier facilities to resolve assembly issues, conduct audits, and ensure alignment with manufacturing best practices.

  • Collaboration with SQE Team: Work closely with the Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) team to define and implement quality control measures, audit protocols, and corrective actions related to cell assembly. Review and assess suppliers' DVP&R results, track production, and support resolution of quality issues via the 8D process.

  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives in cell assembly processes, leveraging data-driven insights and lessons learned to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive documentation of cell assembly processes, supplier communications, quality metrics, and corrective actions - ensuring transparency and traceability.

  • Research, aggregate, and rate present and future cell technologies; summarize and provide updates to leadership and program teams.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 12 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies

  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies

  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

OR

  • PhD in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • At least 5 years of experience in product design/development or new technologies or specialized technologies

  • At least 2 years of experience leading new technologies or specialized technologies

Additional Requirements

  • Qualified candidates, excluding current employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Desired Skills

  • Experience in cell assembly, with a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, quality control, and performance testing.

  • Expertise in NMC and LFP cell chemistry, with a focus on optimizing assembly techniques for performance and reliability.

  • Experience in developing and implementing KPIs and quality metrics for manufacturing processes.

  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data analysis tools to interpret quality data and drive improvement initiatives.

  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with global TRATON teams and external suppliers.

  • Willingness to travel and provide on-site support at supplier locations as needed.

  • Ability and flexibility to travel, including internationally, for up to 2 weeks a few times per year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related fieldKnowledge of battery cell testing standards and protocols (e.g., IEC, UL).

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and standards applicable to battery cell assembly.

  • Experience with supplier management and relationship building.

  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement methodologies.
