As a Principal Application Engineer, you will have an opportunity to make a positive impact across the organization. You are a full stack developer and have the technical depth on various modern technologies and tools. You will build and release reliable software systems at scale. By partnering with enterprise-wide) teams, you’ll develop and maintain full stack solutions that fit our business needs. You’ll use your holistic view of all products (and their interactions) to design elegant solutions and strategize the future state of our larger technical ecosystem. By independently innovating and advocating for best practices, you’ll solve complex problems and guide the team on implementing solutions from inception to production. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates solutions addressing high impact technology and business priorities.

  • Competent in multiple contexts, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, and business domains and is the go-to person for many people (inside and outside of their team)

  • Research new technological opportunities and how they can be used to add technical capabilities at Discover.

  • Drives strategic technology decisions based on collaboration with a board field of experts inside and outside of Discover.

  • Contributes to the external image of Discover Technology as a desired workplace to learn technology best practices. 

  • Participates in strategic technology decisions and learns how these decisions impact Discover as a whole

  • Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains

  • Coaches' technology communities at Discover

Minimum Qualifications

At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:

  • Bachelors – Computer Science or related 

  • 6+ Years – Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related 

  • Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of expert on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Cloud Technologies, preferably AWS

  • Experience in building, deploying, and maintaining APIs, containerized applications/services, and IaaS

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines with Jenkin, Git/GitHub, or Gitlab

  • Experience with messaging systems like RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar

  • Passionate about software engineering practices

  • Programming language experience in Python. Experience in more than one language (Java, C#, Node, etc.) and can pick up a new language quickly

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills

  • Superb collaboration and communication

  • Great organization and time management

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • Experience with OpenShift Container Platform

  • Experience with contract testing using Pact and/or setting up Pact Broker

  • Experience with Golang

  • Full stack web applications development experience using React, Node.js

  • Risk management knowledge

Compensation:

The base pay for this position generally ranges between $104,000.00 to $175,600.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
