Scope of Job

The College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) seeks applicants for multiple faculty positions for a college-wide cluster hire in the broad areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science with applications in autonomous systems, bioinformatics, manufacturing, energy systems, sensing and condition monitoring, robotics, wireless systems, and other emerging technology fields. Successful candidates will contribute to one or more of the following research centers in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: The Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems ( CAMICS ), the Center for Nanotechnology, the Industrial Assessment Center, the NSF Center for Multidisciplinary Research Excellence in Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Systems ( MECIS ), and the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety ( UTCRS ). The college hosts an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in materials science and engineering, and a Ph.D. program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications expected in Fall 2024. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UTRGV has an enrollment of almost 1000 undergraduate and 75 graduate students. The Department offers an ABET -accredited Bachelor of Science, Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering as well as a PhD degree in Material Science & Engineering. Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university(at least conferred before the start date of September 1, 2024). Prospective candidates in all mechanical engineering areas are strongly encouraged to apply.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Discipline specific required qualifications include: 1) evidence of high-quality research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems with applications in Mechanical Engineering, 2) evidence of a strong potential for obtaining funding and supporting graduate students, and 3) experience and/or demonstrated ability teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering. Additionally, candidates are expected to support the master’s programs in mechanical engineering and the PhD program in material science and engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be accorded to applicants possessing expertise in Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning as applied to the field of mechanical engineering. For this position, prior postdoctoral research experience is preferred. Strong communication skills and the capacity to collaborate effectively within a team are also highly desirable. Additional preferred qualification include: 1) experience and/or demonstrated ability developing and teaching courses integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems within the context of mechanical engineering applications, 2) experience and/or demonstrated ability to lead and propose new research projects and proposals to attract external federal, state, or private funding, such as NSF , DoD, DOE , DARPA , NIH , USDOT , NASA , or others, 3) experience and/or demonstrated ability teaching courses in dynamic systems, modeling of physical systems, and control systems, (4) experience and/or demonstrated ability working with undergraduate and graduate engineering students, and (5) demonstrated ability to play a collaborative role as a team member in initiatives for partnerships with schools, community colleges, government agencies, and industry to create an eco-system that will bring economic prosperity to the Rio Grande Valley.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
