Scope of Job

The College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) seeks applicants for multiple faculty positions for a college-wide cluster hire in the broad areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science with applications in autonomous systems, bioinformatics, manufacturing, energy systems, sensing and condition monitoring, robotics, wireless systems, and other emerging technology fields. Successful candidates will contribute to one or more of the following research centers in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems ( CAMICS ), the Center for Nanotechnology, the Industrial Assessment Center, the NSF Center for Multidisciplinary Research Excellence in Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Systems ( MECIS ), the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety ( UTCRS ). The college hosts an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in materials science and engineering, and a Ph.D. program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications expected in Fall 2024. As part of the college-wide cluster hire, the Department of Civil Engineering ( CIVE ) seeks applicants for one or more faculty positions in the broad area of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science with applications in various areas ofconstruction engineering and management. Preferred areas of emphasis are robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles, augmented/virtual reality, optimization, resiliency and sustainability of civil infrastructures, and lean construction. Other civil engineering areas that are closely related will also be considered. The positions are for tenure-track assistant professors; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for credit toward time on tenure track or for appointment as associate professor.

The selected candidate(s) are expected to start in Fall 2024 to meet the growing student enrollments of the CIVE department of about 770 undergraduate and graduate (MS) students with 19 faculty members. The CIVE department promotes education and research in areas related to construction engineering and management, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources/environmental engineering. Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a related field of study from an accredited institution (conferred before the start date of Fall 2024).

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Applicants must show 1) evidence of high-quality research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems with applications in construction engineering and management, 2) potential to develop and maintain a funded research program to lead multidisciplinary collaborative projects, and support graduate students, and 3) experience and/or demonstrated evidence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants are preferred to have one or more of these qualifications: 1) experience and/or demonstrated ability in teaching various courses in construction engineering and management and basic courses in civil engineering, 2) experience and/or demonstrated ability developing and teaching courses integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems content within the context of civil engineering applications for the graduate program, 3) experience and/or demonstrated ability to propose and lead new research projects and proposals to secure external federal, state, or private funding from agencies, such as NSF , DoD, DOE , NIH , USDOT , NASA , TxDOT, or others, 4) experience and/or demonstrated ability working with undergraduate and graduate engineering students, 5) excellent communication skills and teamwork ability, 6) demonstrated ability to play a collaborative role as a team member in initiatives for partnerships with schools, community colleges, government agencies, and industry to create an environment that will bring economic prosperity to the Rio Grande Valley, and 7) Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ( UTRGV ) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
