About the position

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer who will be part of a team focused on building robust, enterprise level experiences and solutions. Prior experience with document management technologies as well as business acumen, are essential for success. Your financial and retail environment experience coupled with expertise around API’s, services, and cloud-based technologies, will help craft innovative solutions to meet our business goals. From inception to completion, you will develop tools and technology, learning quickly from our spirit of experimentation. Overall, you will have a direct impact on improving the performance of our business and ensuring customers can buy and sell the products and services they want in a way that’s right for them.

As part of the Technology organization, you will have the opportunity to implement platforms supporting CarMax digital transformation and create best in class developer experiences in bringing business and platform capabilities to market.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Design modern highly responsive web-based user interface using React and .NET (C#) as primary technology stack, built in cloud-based PaaS / IaaS/ CaaS, open source and third-party solutions tools.

  • Design modern highly responsive web-based user interface using micro frontend/ micro services architecture.

  • Translating designs and wireframes into high-quality code

  • Build reusable components and front-end libraries for future use.

  • Develop cloud-based web experiences that integrate with new and existing back-end functions, and other key cloud platform components.

  • Implement continuous integration and DevOps practices, including automated testing.

  • Optimizing components for maximum performance across a vast array of web-capable devices and browsers

  • Maintain and grow a deep knowledge and functional expertise of the supported technology ecosystem and touchpoints and impacts of changing industry best for deployment.

  • Maintain and grow a deep knowledge of the retail, wholesale, marketplace, and automotive industries, specifically from the point of view of how technology is being applied to power the customer experiences.

  • Work with fellow associates to understand the real-life challenges of customers and discover what they need to move seamlessly between the online and in-person shopping experiences.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in product design, product management and systems architecture to develop experimental solutions and bring great ideas to life.

  • Market your innovative ideas internally and evolve them according to feedback and critique within an agile environment.

  • Stay on top of industry trends and best practice to continuously improve what we do and ensure our customer experience is the best it can be.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work with engineers, designers, and company leaders in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills – can apply clear direction and priorities to teams.

  • Thorough understanding of React.js and its core principles.

  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript, including DOM manipulation and the JavaScript object model.

  • Experience with modern/micro front-end build pipelines and tools.

  • Prior experience with popular React.js workflows (such as Flux or Redux).

  • Familiarity with more current specifications of EcmaScript.

  • Knowledge of isomorphic React is a plus.

  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs, JSON, and micro services architecture

  • Familiarity with HTML / CSS.

  • Knowledge of modern authorization mechanisms, such as JSON Web Token.

  • Experience with common front-end development tools such as Babel, Webpack, NPM, etc.

  • Hands on programming using C#/.Net, and Azure preferred.

  • Experiencing scripting Infrastructure as code in a CI/CD pipeline

  • Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements.

  • Experience with code versioning tools, such as GIT.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with engineers, designers, and company leaders in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills – can apply clear direction and priorities to teams.

Education and/or Experience

  • 8+ years of application development with proficiency in React.js.

  • 4-year degree in an IT related course or study is required.

  • Understanding of application standards and practices with Enterprise Document Management preferred.

  • Microsoft Azure or similar cloud technologies required.

  • Experience working with Agile and DevOps methodologies, required.

  • Knowledge and experience with NoSQL databases (Cosmos, Mongo, Dynamo, etc.) preferred.

  • Knowledge of API Gateway technologies, preferred.

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA CarMax Technology Innovation Center or the Dallas, TX Technology Hub and have a Hybrid work arrangement.

Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
