Summary This is a full-performance journeyman level painter position which also performs other basic tradesmen skill to assist in work such as tiling, sheetrock installation and finishing. The position is organizationally located within the Engineering Service located at the Richmond Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Responsibilities Primary duties include full range of painting, prepping, proper covering and other journeyman level duties. Secondary duties include assisting other maintenance mechanics to accomplish the structural maintenance and repair of the facility. The coating work at this grade is accomplished by any of the accepted methods of the trade including special finishing techniques, such as, marbling and graining, by using coating materials that are prepared in special as well as common ways, and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements. Determines the methods, techniques, devices and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required, for example, glossy finish, grained effect or a finish that must meet specified thicknesses and levels. Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, mixing and applying pre-coating agents, for example, pickling and alkali compounds. Incumbent prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. The painter applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices including those designed to give special effects, for example, brushes, rollers, spray guns and graining devices. Ensures that the coating finish meets and matches all texture, decorative, thickness and level requirements. Work involves the mixing, application and finishing of plaster surfaces in the construction and repair of interior walls and ceilings and stucco exterior walls. The WG-9 Painter performs new plastering on all types of backgrounds, such as metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard and masonry surfaces, as well as repair and patching of plaster and stucco surfaces. Works from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches. Plans and lays out work to be accomplished, selects the proper tools and material and accomplishes the job in accordance with accepted trade practices. In preparing all surfaces for painting, incumbent will be expected to move and/or relocate to a new location, all wall anchors used for securing fixtures, pictures, bulletin boards, etc., before and after painting. If surface repair is required as a result of moving such anchors or fasteners. incumbent will be expected to repair and patch all surfaces consistent with this requirement. Prior to painting, will be expected to pre-tape all fixtures to ensure that trim work meets all expected performance requirements. Will also be expected to cover all furniture within assignment area to avoid any drip marks and/or splash marks as a result of painting efforts. Will be expected to clean assigned area after each workday removing all debris, dust, supplies, etc., generated from work efforts. All paint which may have dripped, splashed, or spilt during the course of work must be thoroughly cleaned up at the end of each day. Must have knowledge and ability to work in hospital, healthcare, and industrial environments in a manner as not to endanger occupants or structure. Endangerment could be in form of chemical, housekeeping, physical hazards, barriers to egress, or medical condition of patients. Must keep up-to-date on rules, regulations, product information and health care practices, such as: "Universal Precautions, Material Safety Data Sheets", burn permits, lock out and tag out procedures, etc. Performs other directly related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to constantly climb ladders, walk and perform light to moderate bending and stooping. Individual will be required to perform simple grasping, fine hand manipulation, reaching above shoulder height. Individual is responsible for maintaining and pushing their own paint cart to all assigned areas. Working Conditions: Is intermittently exposed to excess humidity, chemicals and solvents, fumes; dust and noise. May perform some duties of position on patient wards, within storage areas, on facility grounds or within sub-basement locations. Individual is exposed to possible infectious materials when working in patient areas. Is subject to cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, slips, falls, and other injuries in the performance of required duties. Also exposed to disagreeable odors in the accomplishment of duties.
