Job Responsibilities/Duties

WRPS is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 56 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated organization engineering organization. Engineering at WRPS consists of process engineering, design engineering, nuclear safety, plant/system engineering, construction project engineering, procurement engineering, process and control system engineering, engineering standards/program implementation, and the Chief Technology Office. These areas support all areas of the tank farm mission including Retrievals, Production Operations, Field Projects, Waste Feed Delivery Projects, and long-term innovations.

This position supports the Design Engineering organization with an emphasis on ASME Pipe Code designs. Design Engineers work with Operations, Maintenance, Field Engineering and Facilities to install or retro-fit new structures, systems and components that ultimately support the overall mission of Tank Farms. Design Engineering evaluates existing equipment and/or design features for functionality and provides Subject Matter Experts to the field to support code compliance, design guidance, reviews of alternate designs.

This position includes the following responsibilities;

  • Performing code compliance calculations and executing design to support upgrades with ASME B31.1 and/or B31.3 design requirements.

  • Provide ASME Piping code subject matter expert support to other organizations within Tank Farms as requested.

  • Leading small, multi-disciplined teams to execute design of projects that support Tank Farm operations, Effluent Treatment Facility, 242-A Evaporator and other operational facilities as needed.

Additional engineering duties may include the following;

  • Assume responsibility for the mechanical design aspects of assigned projects/scope including design, application, test, or the preparation of specifications for systems, materials, equipment or components in collaboration with other engineering/science competencies within the team.

  • Prepare technical manuals, calculations, drawings, reports, procedures and deliver technical presentations to engineering, operations, projects, and customer organizations.

  • Conduct site/area visits and investigate engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives and provide recommendations.

  • Apply technical knowledge toward the reduction of the cost and improvement of systems where possible and incorporate new ideas resulting from engineering/scientific progress in the field.

  • Support preparation of scope, cost, and schedules for projects/tasks.

  • Problem-solving for complex technical challenges with adaptations of engineering alternatives.

  • Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.

Required Qualifications

Grade 20:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Ten (10) years of related experience.

Grade 21:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Twelve (12) years of related experience.

Grade 22:

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Fourteen (14) years of related experience

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with ASME 31.1 and B31.3 piping system designs

  • Experience in utilizing software design tools for pipe stress and flow calculations.

  • Professional Engineering License

  • Experience with the use of AFT Fathom, AutoPipe, MathCAD, and Microsoft Office products.

  • Ability to lead small groups of engineers to reach a common design goal

  • Excellent presentation and verbal communication skills

  • Advanced Engineering Degree and/or Certifications

Compensation & Benefits

Grade 20:

Hiring Range Minimum: $126,025

Hiring Range Maximum: $158,875

Grade 21:

Hiring Range Minimum: $138,700

Hiring Range Maximum: $174,900

Grade 22:

Hiring Range Minimum: $155,625

Hiring Range Maximum: $204,775

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
