Project Overview
Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era. The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities. The High-Level Waste (HLW) Facility is the most complex of all the WTP facilities. The HLW will vitrify (process into glass) the highest concentrations of radioactive and chemical waste located on the Hanford site. HLW staff consist of top professionals who are designing, planning, and procuring all materials necessary to construct HLW vitrification systems. This position will support and assist the HLW team to complete the HLW mission and commission the operations of this one-of-a-kind facility. This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed.
Position Summary
Under limited supervision, the HLW Senior Industrial Hygienist (IH) is responsible for implementing and administering project industrial safety and hygiene programs affecting employee, public safety and occupational health. Serves as a resource for line management to administer a proactive prevention program for occupational accidents and illnesses; under limited supervision performs moderately complex technical work in a wide range of IH disciplines to achieve compliance with IH standards along with federal and state regulatory requirements; exhibits knowledge and applies advanced concepts, practices and procedures of IH; develops, implements and maintains IH programs, systems and procedures; monitors and prevents hazards and diseases that could be found in the work area; investigates accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning hazards in the workplace; recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures and operating equipment to minimize hazards; develops and conducts employee training, emergency preparedness and assures the quality of programs; provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice; may provide guidance for a team of ES&H specialists and/or support personnel.

Provides technical assistance to office and field activities to ensure compliance with applicable international, Federal, State, and/or Company health and safety regulations.
Conducts compliance evaluations of equipment, structures, and work in progress to ensure that regulatory environmental, safety and health standards of the Company and all applicable codes are followed.
Recommends facilities and technological specifications to carry out programs that fulfill the organization's overall objectives.
Identifies construction workplace hazards, implements controls, oversees work execution and provides feedback.
Develops appropriate hazard controls and mitigation strategies and provides oversight of work activities to ensure controls are effectively implemented.
Supports worker safety and health needs, including injury and event response and case management.
Ensures effective implementation of safety and health rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Actively participates in pre-task and safety meetings.
Performs incident/event investigations and prepares associated reports.
Maintains current knowledge of specific government agency requirements.
Determines and develops approaches to solutions.
Assists with the development, implementations and maintenance of safety and health programs, systems and procedures.
Prepares and reviews technical reports, correspondence, and program compliance documents.
Establishes and maintains permits as required.
Meets applicable regulatory codes and standards where required.
Assists in the development of IS&H training programs and conducts IS&H training meetings as necessary.
Performs analysis of IS&H data.
Trains and assists subordinate IS&H specialists in sampling and assessment methodologies.
Conducts and assists projects with sampling, monitoring, data interpretation and occupational health surveys to ensure compliance with established programs.
Senior IH are expected to pursue and/or complete a professional certification, such as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
Qualifications and Skills
Basic Qualifications
Level 1 : Bachelor of Science degree with at least 9 years of experience or a MS degree and 7 years of experience. Degree(s) should be in a related science or engineering field.
Level 2 : Bachelor of Science degree with at least 13 years of experience or a Master of Science degree with 11 years of experience. Degree(s) should be in a related science or engineering field.
Additional Qualifications
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is preferred.
Experience in a nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processing or petroleum refining environment is preferred.
Must possess the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.
Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
