RedHat Principal Software Engineer in Raleigh, North Carolina

Job summary

The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer with broad software engineering experience, especially around networking and Kubernetes, to join the team working on on-premise Red Hat OpenShift in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will work with, design and plan our networking technologies for Red Hat's cloud offerings and contribute to the engineering of capabilities around the on-premises deployment and life cycle management of Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift. You'll play a leading technical role in developing these from inception, through upstream development, to delivery in Red Hat’s offerings and large-scale production deployment by enterprise customers. Being situated on the networking team you will provide network capability and support to enable project delivery, specifically with regard to datacenter networking and working with network security appliances. As a Principal Software Engineer you will help guide and lead the technical direction, working in close collaboration with your direct team, with others in the organizations where there are cross-team dependencies, as well as in upstream open source communities, all as part of a geographically distributed team. You will also work with these teams to ensure that we are addressing customer escalations and support issues as they occur. You’ll need to be passionate about modern software development and open source and have broad software engineering experience, specifically in networking, with an interest in hardware management.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Help set technical direction for the bare metal networking team

  • Engage in active cross-team collaboration

  • Coordinate feature development with other teams and the Product Management team

  • Be prepared to represent the team and technical status in feedback calls

  • Lead and participate in design discussions and draft design documents

  • Interact with upstream communities and participate in upstream development

  • Implement features

  • Improve our testing infrastructure

  • Write automated tests and integrate them into our continuous integration (CI) systems

  • Work with our Red Hat's Global Customer Support (GCS) team and partner support teams on resolving customer issues

  • Investigate the problem space in search of new and better ways to do things

  • Review code and fix bugs

Required skills

  • Written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent

  • 5-10 years of significant software development experience

  • Experience in several programming languages, particularly Python and Go

  • Familiarity with container technology like Docker, Podman, LXC, and BSD Jails

  • Knowledge of Linux networking (L2, L3, L4, L7 ARP, IP and MAC addresses, DHCP, and DNS)

  • Knowledge of cloud networking overlays and software-defined networking (SDN)

  • Experience with and understanding of Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift, including experience with operators

  • Experience with and understanding of hardware management

  • Passion for open source software development

  • Keen eye for good architecture and the ability to develop new architectures

  • Deep understanding of cloud computing and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

  • Focus on test-driven development (TDD) with good knowledge of unit testing frameworks and methodologies

The following are considered a plus:

  • Load balancing and high availability experience

  • Familiarity with Deployment technologies like Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform or Terraform

  • Familiarity with container orchestration technologies like Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, and Mesos, or routing protocols like BGP, OSPF, and IS-IS
