POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree and certificate programs, as well as dozens of workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 25,000 students. More than one-third of our degree-seeking students were born outside of the United States, coming to LaGuardia from 136 countries and speaking forty-three heritage languages. More than half are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest live in Brooklyn and beyond. Approximately two-thirds of our degree students receive financial aid. LaGuardia Community College is seeking a Student Life Engagement Specialist. This position is pivotal to the development of community among the student population by the creation of a milieu that provides opportunities for the students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular learning experiences. The establishment of community is significant to increasing the likelihood of greater student engagement, ergo and impacting completion metrics. Reporting to the Director of Campus Life, the Specialist will play a key role in the creation, execution and assessment of all club related activities and will be responsible for outreach and student retention. In addition to the duties in the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Administer cultural, educational programs and academic development events and trainings;

  • Assist with imputing requisitions into CUNY Buy for College Association requests; Facilitate purchasing of food and supplies orders for College Association and co-curricular proposals;

  • Assist with providing oversight to the Student Government Association (SGA) tutoring lab;

  • Collaborate with campus departments and student groups to develop and plan special events, programs and workshops throughout the college;

  • Assist with providing support and coordination of programming and events;

  • Assist Director with research and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact;

  • Assist with outreach to community-based organization to support service-learning opportunities

  • Assist with managing co-curricular transcript

  • Develop content in support of enhancing existing programs and services, as well as, intermittently introducing new content through research, data collection and analysis;

  • Assist director with engaging Faculty to market and support college wide student engagement;

  • Provide administrative support to the Campus life director and office as needed

  • Serve as a primary point of direct administrative contact and liaison with other offices;

  • Compile informational resources (books, articles, videos, internet, etc.) on inter and intra departmental options and opportunities and develop and implement information sessions;

  • Provide basic information, instructions, and materials as requested by students, faculty, and others who contact the department; Assist with onboarding of all new student leaders;

  • Lead frequent meetings with student leaders to discuss decision-making, assess student interests, respond to student needs, and anticipate student programming/leadership issues;

  • Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience working with students and coordinating events in a Higher Education setting preferred.

  • Computer proficiency using standard office software programs/applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Experience working with a culturally diverse population.

  • Strong customer service and organizational skills

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft office Suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

  • Develops and implements programming, services, and learning opportunities for students, promoting the personal development of a diverse student population.

  • Administers one or more student affairs programs, providing program management, assistance with policy development, supervision and training of all professional and support staff, budget monitoring, and report preparation

  • Serves as a resource to student groups and/or populations as a consultant and advocate for their concerns

  • Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact

  • Produces workshops and materials to support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$52,267 -$70,238

Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
