Behavioral Health Paraprofessional (BHPP) to Provide recovery support services in various settings to peers within the community to support, educate and provide services to advance recovery and wellness.

Assist peer members using recognized evidence-based practice peer support services to articulate their goals for recovery, while they learn and practice new skills, aiding them to monitor their progress, that supports them in their treatment; while modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the peer support specialist\'s own recovery experience.

Give support to the Peer member, helping them advocate for themselves to obtain effective services, and to develop and implement their personal recovery plans.

Peer Support Specialist is a role model to peer member\'s; exhibiting competency in personal recovery with the use of coping skills; serves as a peer advocate and supporter, providing peer members information and peer support in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

Support adult peers in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process.

Understand how the support services provided impact a peers recovery and contributes to their progression in the self-management of their recovery.

Document the value of the services provided as evidence of outcomes in recovery.

Perform in a wide range of settings such as in the wellness center, during transport, the peer or family home, in community based outpatient settings including community agencies, in-patient psychiatric hospitals, or retail stores, food banks, etc.

Demonstrate varying levels of recovery and mental health symptoms.

Ability to:

Provide quality services without judgment or personal agenda.

Model recovery and set appropriate boundaries.

Identify a peer member\'s unique strengths and pathway to recovery.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Assist:

In coaching and role modeling the value of every individual\'s recovery experience.

Peer member in articulating personal goals for recovery through the use of one-to-one and group sessions. Use these sessions to support peers in identifying and creating goals

In developing wellness plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them in achieving those goals.

Peer member in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups, as well as means of locating and joining existing groups in wellness center, the community and the clinics.

Peer member in working with their case manager or treatment team in determining the steps he/she needs to take in order to achieve these goals and self-directed recovery.

Peer member in building social skills with each other in a group setting to build an internal support network; duplicate the effort in the public to increase a community support system and build citizenship and skills that will enhance job acquisition.

Peer member in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy. This will be accomplished through regular meetings, individual or group sessions using role modeling techniques to demonstrate how to handle difficulties and how to present themselves in certain situations, or to handle problem that may arise in interactions with others.

Other duties:

Use ongoing individual and group sessions to teach and guide peer members to identify and combat negative self-talk to overcome fears and triggers through this forum which allows group members to share their experiences. As part of this group setting use recognized literature, media, etc. to educate them to build their since of hope by learning to identify their strengths and combat their negative self-talk, learned helplessness to self-manage their recovery.
