A new PhD position in VLSI test at the Poznań University of Technology

A PhD scholarship provided by Siemens

We are seeking to recruit a PhD student to work on testing of semiconductor digital integrated circuits. You will join the team led by Prof. Janusz Rajski of Siemens Digital Industries Software (Wilsonville, OR, USA), and Prof. Jerzy Tyszer in the Faculty of Computing and Telecommunications at the Poznań University of Technology (Poland). You should have a Master degree (or near completion) in computer engineering, computer science, electronics, telecommunications, or closely-related subjects. In particular, experience and excellent knowledge of software engineering and digital logic design are highly desirable. To successfully complete the deliverables of the project, the candidate will need to be highly motivated with good communication skills, and the ability to interact and work closely with fellow team members and developers, located both in the US and in Poland. You should therefore be enthusiastic about the discipline and committed with an aptitude for independent working as well as working as part of a diverse, interdisciplinary team.

What is it like to study a PhD in VLSI test?

Working under the guidance of an expert supervisory team, you will work towards completing a thesis making original contributions to the field of electronic testing of digital circuits and systems. Your research will involve collaboration with industrial partners. You will also have the opportunity to connect with a professional community through attending international conferences and publishing papers. You will likely divide your time between studying scholarly literature, researching new ideas, developing software, running experiments, attending supervision meetings, and finally writing a thesis. As a part of departmental training, you will attend and participate in lectures and tutorials offered by a 4-year PhD program at the doctoral school of the Poznań University of Technology in areas such as research methodologies and presentation skills.

Possible PhD research areas include:

• Testing of VLSI designs

• Hardware security

• Data mining for fault diagnosis

• Artificial intelligence/machine learning

• Cloud computing

PhD funding options

The main body funding PhD studies in Poland is the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. As being enrolled in the doctoral school, your PhD project will have funding attached, meaning that you will automatically be awarded a living cost stipend. Furthermore, Siemens Digital Industries Software will provide you with an additional doctoral scholarship based on a mutual agreement between Siemens and the Poznań University of Technology. The same agreement will secure your access to industrial tools and data (subject of a separate nondisclosure agreement) as well as Siemens facilities both in Poland and in the US.

PhD in VLSI test careers

Career opportunities in VLSI test are wide-ranging. Expertise is in demand in cutting-edge semiconductor and electronic design automation industries, as well as the sectors that make day-to-day modern life possible such as transport, communication, consumer electronics, health care, and many others. You may also choose to continue your academic career, for example by applying for a postdoctoral position that eventually may lead to a permanent research position.
