The Utility Forester guides and manages the safety standards/performance, administration, customer relations and tree trimming specifications for the Vegetation Management department throughout the service territory.What does a Utility Forester do?•Ensures all work activities have been pre-planned and resources allocated appropriately for the efficient day-to-day operations related to Transmission and Distribution Vegetation Management activities. •Works with the Manager of Vegetation Management in reviewing tree related outages and assists in developing or modifying line clearance specifications/programs in order to reduce tree related service outages in order to improve system reliability. •Ensures all customer inquiries/concerns related to tree clearing activities are addressed promptly, with fair and consistent approaches to provide our customers with the best customer service experience. •Leads customer relation programs associated with municipalities, regulators, and residential customers. •Explains basic tree growth, health issues, and accepted arboricultural practices in order to inform/educate customers, the general public, and/or municipal officials about tree growth around utility lines and the programs established to maintain the required clearances.•Participates in the development and utilization of distribution circuit and transmission corridor maps created on ArcGIS and other various programs. •Responsible for various administrative functions associated with budgeting/projections, invoicing, production data collection and reporting along with auditing responsibilities. •Maintains compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to vegetation management including all necessary regulatory reporting.•Obtains landowner identification and notification information as well as determine state and federal jurisdictional lands along the right of way corridors. •Provides overall supervision and leadership of both internal and external resources in order to facilitate continuous process and productivity improvements to obtain corporate and departmental objectives.•Supports storm/emergency restoration effortsWhat does it take to be a Utility Forester?Required:•Bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related field of study and direct line clearance experience. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree in forestry or a related field of study and 3 years of direct line clearance experience. In lieu of an associate’s degree, a high school diploma or equivalency degree and 7 years of direct line clearance experience. •Professional forestry background, including tree identification skills, basic tree physiology, tree insect and disease issues, and growth/maintenance requirements of both native and introduced tree species of the Hudson Valley.•Strong computer skills including a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Excel) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly•Excellent oral and written communication skills•A valid driver’s license Preferred:•15 years of direct utility line clearance experience•General knowledge in GIS and surveying technologies•General knowledge of CAD •Capable of utilizing various land-based mapping systems to plan and review fieldwork •ISA Certified Arborist/Utility Arborist •Member of the International Society of ArboricultureApplications will be accepted until May 19, 2025This position has a career path which allows for advancement opportunities within a job series.
