Legacy Health Technical Lab Assistant - Specimen Processing in Portland, Oregon

The Technical Lab Assistant, under the direction of the department manager and/or supervisor or technical lead, serves as a primary support resource to laboratory technical staff in accordance with established policies and regulatory accreditation agency requirements. Support activities may involve pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical procedures, and disbursement of laboratory data in assigned technical areas. Tasks may include and are not limited to phlebotomy, specimen processing, maintaining supply inventory, gathering quality metric data, loading samples on analyzers, equipment maintenance, and making safety rounds. Technical Lab Assistant participates in quality improvement projects and applies knowledge of laboratory operations to assist customers in utilizing laboratory services. Complies with all laboratory and safety policies. Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by laboratory policy and regulating agencies. Legacy Laboratory Services is an integrated lab service. Staff may be assigned to lab facilities at different sites in the system.

No phlebotomy

Technical

Performs CLIA waived testing in departments as directed by technical staff.

Assists in bone marrow or sweat chloride specimen collection.

Prepares specimens for testing.

Prepares and stains slides for technical staff.

Loads analyzers with samples for testing.

Sets up microbiology cultures.

Performs analyzer maintenance and quality control.

Client Service

Handles client service issues at all levels appropriately, courteously, and effectively with a customer focus.

Utilizes written and verbal communication which may include but not limited to fax, telephone, and the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

Conforms communication to laboratory policies and procedures.

Troubleshoots basic client service problems or refers appropriately.

Communicates appropriate information to health care providers regarding specimen collection.

Computer Skills

Uses Laboratory Information System and other systems related to the management of patient orders, patient registration, lab order retrieval or order entry, logging in test samples, documenting testing details, finding missing specimens, organizing, and distributing work lists and pending test reports, payment processing, and payment reconciliation.

Phlebotomy

Performs venipuncture and capillary collections appropriate for the age of the patient, professionally, and with minimal discomfort in accordance with laboratory policies.

Specimen identification

Follows all laboratory procedures for proper patient identification and specimen labeling.

Drug Screen Collection

Performs drug screen collection (may include BAT testing) accurately, following guidelines and chain of custody exactly as prescribed.

Specimen Receiving/ Processing

Follows all procedures relating to specimen processing.

Flags specimens for rejection.

Dispatches specimens to appropriate testing locations.

Aliquots, labels, and processes specimens using appropriate equipment and devices, i.e., centrifuges and pipettes.

Stores specimens under appropriate environmental conditions using approved specimen retrieval systems.

Instrument/Equipment Maintenance

Maintains laboratory equipment and the general clean, organized appearance of the department.

Monitors and records temperatures.

Demonstrates proper utilization and maintenance of equipment and QC methods to promote the CQI philosophy of Legacy.

Proficiently operates and troubleshoots equipment in areas of responsibility.

Records and monitors QC and maintenance according to department protocol.

Alerts technical lead, supervisor, or manager to QC/maintenance problems.

Computer Downtime

Demonstrates knowledge of Computer Downtime Procedures.

Understands, for given job assignment, how to manage patient/specimen data when either the order interface or Lab Information System are unavailable for use.

Regulatory Compliance

Follows CAP, CLIA and other accreditation and safety guidelines as described in their respective policies.

Identifies and communicates patient safety problems to the manager or supervisor.

Participates in government or regulatory agency inspections as needed.

Training, Education, Quality and Safety

Attends department meetings and completes training and education activities as assigned.

Participates in quality improvement projects and root cause analysis activities.

Participates in all applicable safety training sessions.

Knows the location and contents of the safety manual.

Knows the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.

Follows standard precautions and uses personal protective equipment as required.

Education:

High school diploma or GED is required. An Associate degree or 45 credit hours of college level chemistry or biological science is preferred. Successful completion of medical lab assistant program or phlebotomy training course that includes an externship is preferred if phlebotomy is required for job duties.

Experience:

Phlebotomy skills are required for lab assistants working in locations that perform specimen collection. Previous work experience with phlebotomy or the successful completion of a phlebotomy training course or a minimum two years of related clinical laboratory or laboratory assistant experience is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Required:

Advanced reading and writing skills.

Advanced interpersonal and communication skills.

Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.

Ability to operate standard office equipment (i.e., telephone, facsimile, photocopier, computer, and printer.

Advanced customer service experience.

Basic medical terminology.

Preferred:

Experience with drug screen specimen collection and basic specimen selection,

handling, and storage activities.
