Accountability Objectives:
As a daily work assignment and under the direction of Management, the Lead Lab Assistant shall organize, coordinate, and lead laboratory functions and activities of assigned colleagues. Coordinates with Department and Hospital Leadership to meet the phlebotomy needs of the organization.
Responsible for performing phlebotomy in a variety of environments in the inpatient and/or outpatient settings. This will include all aspects of specimen collection, documentation, registration and submission/order to the laboratory for analysis. Other areas of responsibility may include specimen reception, clients offices, or Satellite labs.
II Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.
A. Education
High School diploma or equivalent, preferred.
Completion of Medical Assistant/Certified Nursing Assistant or Phlebotomy program or equivalent required.
Two year college degree in biological science or health related field, preferred.
B. Licensure / Certification
Certification in one of the following: AMT (American Medical Technologist) ASCP (American Soc of Clinical Pathologists); NCPT (National Soc of Certified Phlebotomy Technicians); or NCCT (Nat'l Center for Competency Testing); See below for cert requirement.
Should associate not complete the certification as stated in #1 above within 12 months of start of position, he/she shall no longer be qualified for position and will be "displaced" in accordance with bargaining language.
Current Heart Saver (HS) certification.
C Special Skill / Aptitudes
Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
Able to take initiative and be an active participant, • open to changes that will improve the organization.
Leadership skills necessary to motivate individuals and teams, and resolve problems in a professional manner.
Ability to make decisions for the safety of patients, visitors and staff.
Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals and values of Trinity Health.
Ability to work with others collaboratively within a "team" environment to complete goals and tasks.
Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, medical laboratory orders, container types, anatomy and physiology as it relates to phlebotomy.
Good understanding of laboratory operations, terminology, methodology, and logistics in a clinical laboratory.
Must be proficient in various computer systems
D. Experience
- Two years experience in a hospital laboratory related experience or direct patient care work involving phlebotomy in a health care setting.
III Duties / Responsibilities:
DUTIES:
Works collaboratively with the various units while organizing and coordinating phlebotomy functions and activities of assigned area(s). Leads daily huddle. Establishes daily work assignment and follow up for special projects and assignments .Assigns duties, issues supplies and equipment.
Completes daily audits/assignment review to ensure completion
Inspects and evaluates completed work including billing exceptions. Provides instruction and guidance as needed. Works with management to assure compliance with established policies and procedures and that work performed meets established housekeeping standards.
Troubleshoots problems including lab ordering issues through an understanding of electronic health records.
Coordinates the education of new employees in blood drawing techniques, policies and procedures, and specimen reception.
Provides guidance, expertise, and positive mentoring to staff.
Assists with internal QA reports.
Perform all duties as assigned as Phlebotomist or Satellite Lab Associate II.
Create and edit colleague work schedule under the guide and approval of Department Leadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports for work on time, appropriately dressed in uniform (including Hospital issued technology) and ready to work in assigned area.
Communication Devices: Uses SJMO issued technology, software, passwords to ensure colleague has current access to all systems. IE: Email, Volte, Pager
All breaks must be taken at assigned time in authorized areas, unless prior approval is given from department supervisor.
Maintains Annual Certification.
Meets SJMHS Service Excellence Standards.
