Carnegie Mellon University Veterinary and Husbandry Technician - Neuroscience Institute (Dietrich College) in PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania

Reference #: 2020969 The Neuroscience Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was launched to bring together faculty and staff from across the University to conduct multi-disciplinary work to advance the state of brain science.

We are seeking a full-time Veterinary and Husbandry Technician to work in the laboratory! This position will aid in and administer veterinary medical procedures, collection of biological samples, administration of medications, and maintain accurate records, as well as provide husbandry and care of laboratory animals. The position requires a dedication to animal welfare and well-being, while helping with the day-to-day operations in the lab, working with coordination between the researchers, facility staff, and veterinarian.

Your Core Responsibilities will include: Psychological enrichment of animals. Administering medications and treatments to animals. Monitor and document animal health. Performing veterinary technical procedures independently and under the direction of a veterinarian. Prepare surgery and animal for procedures. Monitor animals during surgery and throughout recovery after surgical procedures. Assist researchers and veterinarian as needed, including in surgical and veterinary procedures. Provide support for the daily operations of the animal facility, including animal husbandry and cleaning and sanitizing caging and housing. Cleaning and disinfecting areas within the facility according to standard operating procedures and regulations. Using and monitoring sanitation equipment such as cage washer and autoclave. Assisting researchers and the veterinarian as needed. Maintaining facility equipment and reporting problems. Daily monitoring and documentation of animals' health and environmental conditions.

Qualifications HS Diploma/GED required, Associate's degree in Animal Science or similar field is preferred. Veterinary Technician Certification preferred, or comparable work experience At least one year of relevant work experience in the domain of animal health Working knowledge of animal husbandry practices and procedures for common laboratory animals. Ability to load and unload caging and lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to work directly with laboratory animals and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, and work area.Requirements: Successful background check Vaccinations and TB testing will be required On the job OSHA Hazardous Materials Safety Training requiredAdditional Information: Maintaining humane animal care in research requires diligent adherence to animal welfare regulations. Given the nature of the role, it is possible you would be required to work hours on weekends and holidays.
