Purpose:

A qualified CRNA Clinical Director manages nurse anesthesia and related peri-anesthesia services. They develop and interpret organizational policies for budgets and personnel, ensure the safe and proper operation of equipment, techniques, and procedures, and evaluate activities to maintain quality patient care. They hold 24-hour accountability for leading and managing the department’s human resources, clinical, financial, and administrative operations to continuously improve patient care quality and create a healthy workplace in collaboration with organizational leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Supply and Equipment Management : Coordinate purchasing to maximize efficiency.

  • Staff Education : Monitor and approve continuing education requests, ensuring compliance with documentation.

  • Vision Development : Engage staff and stakeholders in planning and implementing departmental changes.

  • Conflict Resolution : Provide conflict management to maintain a healthy work environment.

  • Innovation and Improvement : Lead teams in supporting ongoing improvements and innovations.

  • Performance Feedback : Provide ongoing feedback and formal annual reviews to staff CRNAs.

  • Collaboration : Work collaboratively with key stakeholders and develop Assistant CRNA Clinical Directors.

  • Scheduling and Assignments : Manage work schedules, on-call arrangements, and operational demands.

  • Visitor Monitoring : Ensure compliance with privacy, clearance, and infection control practices.

  • Policy Development : Develop and maintain departmental policies and procedures.

  • Credentialing : Participate in credentialing and performance evaluations for employees.

  • Standards of Care : Ensure anesthesia care standards are followed.

  • Interdisciplinary Partnership : Promote collaboration with hospital staff and healthcare teams.

  • Thought Leadership : Serve as an expert in peri-anesthesia services and electronic health records.

  • Training and Education : Assist in training students and support personnel.

  • Goal Setting : Contribute to planning goals and objectives for the site.

  • Team Promotion : Support a qualified team of anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and ancillary personnel.

  • Productivity Goals : Develop and implement productivity goals and analyze data for resource utilization.

  • Budget Management : Assist in developing capital and operational budgets and manage labor costs.

  • Relationship Building : Develop productive working relationships internally and externally.

  • Fiscal Responsibility : Demonstrate sound fiscal management and hold staff accountable for resource use.

The Clinical CRNA Director reports to the Senior CRNA Director and is an active member of the anesthesia department, involved in all aspects of patient care.

Qualifications for CRNA Clinical Director:

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia education program.

  • Knowledgeable about controlled substance policies per Federal and state laws.

  • Master’s degree or higher preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in nurse anesthesia.

  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.

Skills:

  • Ability to understand, lead, and motivate personnel.

  • Strong organizational and goal-setting skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Registered Nurse license in Pennsylvania.

  • Board Certified, Recertified, or eligible by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.

  • Current AHA-approved CPR certification.

  • AHA-approved ACLS/PALS certifications as required by the institution.

  • Act 33, 34, and 73 clearances.

Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

  • Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Act 33, 34, and 73 clearances with renewal.

Licensure Notes:

  • Must have current licensure in the state where the facility is located or a multistate license if covered by the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC).

  • If changing residency to the state where the facility is located, must apply for licensure within 60 days.
