POSITION SUMMARY
The Office of Community Health & Safety (OCH&S) works to address longstanding disparities in health outcomes and criminal legal systems involvement for people in Pittsburgh. Critical to OCH&S’s mission is the Continuum of Support, which utilizes social work staff and expertise to execute public health-informed strategies alongside public safety personnel to prevent and respond to crises ensuring that Pittsburgh is a healthy and safe city for all. Reporting to the Police Team Lead, the Community Social Worker (CSW) is a Masters-level position that primarily staffs the Co-Response program, responding to crises and other emergent calls for service alongside designated Pittsburgh Bureau of Police personnel.
The Community Social Worker will de-escalate individuals in crisis, seeking to mitigate the risk of harm and further decompensation . Relying on a person-centered and team-based approach, the CSW will prioritize accurate and effective needs assessments, identifying immediate safety risks and connecting individuals to services and social supports that address emergent and underlying needs during and after crisis. The successful incumbent will have extensive knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, as well as community, local, state, and federal resources. Given the co-responder model, an ability and willingness to work closely with law enforcement personnel is required . This is a daylight- shift position that will require matching schedule to assigned law enforcement units.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of crisis intervention, risk assessment, harm reduction, behavioral health laws, a focus on empowering individual agency and choice, and experience in mental/behavioral health support, and/or supervision. Robust advocacy and documentation skills will further enhance the ideal candidate’s ability to support program participants .
