UPMC is looking for a full-time Biomedical Surgical Equipment Technician I to support our Mercy location.

This position works Monday- Friday, 6:30am - 3:00pm with a weekly on-call rotation.

Purpose:

The Biomedical Surgical Equipment Technician I (BSET I) performs operations of all Laser/Image Guidance Systems within UPMC. The BSET I shall also assist in preventive maintenance, minor repairs, inspections and calibration of a limited scope of low to mid-level biomedical equipment under the guidance and supervision of an experienced BMET or BSET. Scope of work shall include patient related medical devices used throughout UPMC, hospital affiliates, and institutions contracting for services with BioTronics Inc. Work under direct supervision and select from a variety of established procedures to establish assigned tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs operations of Laser/Image Guidance systems.

  • Participates in on-call rotation and scheduling as indicated by Laser/IGS lead.

  • Directly collaborating with clinical staff including but not limited to nurses and physician when surgeries and procedures are taking place.

  • Participating in the surgical room during surgeries/procedures.

  • Placing and operating navigational tools on patients.

  • Maintaining the fiber optic delivery systems at times in a surgical procedure.

  • Routinely perform preventive maintenance, inspection, and repair of Low and Medium Priority type medical equipment.

  • With direct supervision, occasionally performs preventive maintenance, inspection and repairs of medium priority type medical equipment.

  • Maintain records of all work activities in the Computerized Maintenance Management System and Kronos.

  • Priority Class 'Low' Equipment includes but is not limited to: Lab equipment, physical therapy equipment, saws, dental equipment, compressors, and general patient care equipment, arthroscopy instruments, standard scissors, forceps, retractors, elevators, ortho curettes, osteotomes, chisels, bone cutters, printer and PC peripherals.

  • Priority Class `Medium Equipment includes but is not limited to: Patient monitoring systems, video equipment, warmers (blood and fluid), scope washers, lab equipment (analyzers), oximeters, infusion devices, diagnostic test equipment (pulmonary), NIBP units, humidifiers, oxygen equipment (respiratory), nerve/muscle stimulator, Doppler, computer work stations, pumps, tourniquets, SCD, hypothermia, EKG machines, ultrasound (PT), OR tables, OR lights and sonics, rongeurs, needle holders, general imaging/radiology equipment.

  • Understand and implement specific regulatory requirements.

  • Understand and operate all basic test equipment.

  • Participate in continuing education.

  • Travel between UPMC sites, hospital affiliates, and institutions for services with BioTronics Inc. is required as needed.

  • Use of personal vehicle may be required.

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Highschool diploma or GED equivalent and 2 years of relevant healthcare or supply chain experience OR any one of the below:

  • a. 2-year degree OR

  • b. has completed appropriate military training program OR

  • c. Successfully completed program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and certification.

  • Previous experience working in the surgical services and/or imaging services department/s preferred, but not required.

  • Previous experience handling medical equipment in Central Services (CS), Material Management or similar departments are preferred but not required.

  • Experience in electronics and/or electromechanical devices is preferred but not required.

  • Basic computer skills as required to operate a Computerized Maintenance Management System and common office software including but not limited to MS Office.

  • May in the course of duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with the medication is allowed. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
