POSITION PURPOSE:

Provides occupational safety management expertise for operations including: control of hazardous energy, compressed gases, machine guarding, fire protection, personal protective equipment, electrical, fall protection and fleet, powered industrial trucks, heavy equipment, hoisting and rigging, industrial hygiene, and medical surveillance programs. Demonstrates a personal commitment to safety and quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides technical expertise in industrial and construction safety for NWD activities.

• Manages NWD Safety and Health Programs and employees to support all activities.

• Provides guidance to supervisors, employees and work planners to incorporate safety and health requirements into work activities.

• Maintains technical knowledge and provides interpretation of applicable safety and health codes, regulations, standards, and DOE directives.

• Working with supervisors and workers, determines controls for workplace hazards.

• Prepares hazard analysis and control documents.

• Serves as a subject matter expert for the training organization to assist in developing compliant and effective safety and health training modules.

• Owns and manages company safety and health programs and procedures.

• Performs accident investigations as necessary.

• Assists supervisors in conducting safety meetings. Provides informal and formal training to workers as required.

• Maintains a working knowledge of industrial hygiene practices as they apply company specific hazards and performs basic monitoring.

• Communicates results of technical assessments and evaluations through formal and informal means as appropriate. Maintains records in accordance with NWD Records Management policies.

• Must be able to accomplish responsibilities independently with little supervision.

• Responsible and accountable for Safety & Health performance and the communication of safety awareness including all-hands meetings.

• Maintains a safe working environment. Demonstrates awareness and implementation of applicable environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) requirements while also alerting co-workers of such requirements as needed.

• Demonstrates ability to get along with co-workers, customers and visitors.

• Demonstrates a personal commitment to safety and quality.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Safety Responsibilities

• Keeps work area in order and free of hazards.

• Performs work within the controls identified and stops work when an unsafe work condition exists.

• Participates in safety programs and initiatives.

• Reports all injuries.

• Participates in work planning so that hazards are identified and appropriate corrective actions are taken.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree or greater in safety or a related field is preferred.

• Certified Safety Professional is required.

• Requires at least eight years of experience in occupational safety.

• Experience with implementation of DOE directives is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

Language Skills

• Ability to read and interpret standards, regulations, and technical references, etc.

• Ability to write formal reports and correspondence and prepare routine and non-routine deliverables.

Communication Skills

• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Reasoning Ability

• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

Other Skills/Abilities

• Ability to operate a calculator, office copier, fax and computer are required.

• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

• Ability to apply concepts of algebra, calculus, geometry, and other mathematical principles.

• Ability to perform basic safety engineering and industrial hygiene calculations (e.g., airborne concentrations, time-weighted averages, moments).

Special Requirements:

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” clearance.

• This position requires travel and overnight stay.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to sit for part of the day. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and drive.

• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds or more.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

• Must be capable of wearing standard personal protective equipment (hard hat, gloves, coveralls, safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety shoes) as needed.

• Must be able to pass a respirator physical successfully.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Works mainly in a typical office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

• Will often spend time in field assignments, etc. where noise level and environmental conditions may vary.
