Job Title: Design Engineer

Salary: £38,832 to £52,000 (depending on experience)

Location : Peterborough

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, develops and manufactures 0.5L to 18L Cat® and Perkins branded engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar’s company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future.

The Component Engineering team are pivotal to Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) success. Based in Peterborough, this team is responsible for the mechanical design and development of diesel engines up to 7.1 litres which are used in a range of machine platforms.

Job Summary

An exciting opportunity to join Aftertreatment team within the Component Engineering department to support the design and development of exhaust systems and ancillary components for C2.8L & C3.6L medium sized diesel engines. Scope of projects vary from new product design, resolution of current product related issues, support capacity uplift measures, new market growth opportunities and NTI projects in readiness for future emissions regulations.

The successful candidate will work alongside other highly talented engineers, utilising their design and problem-solving skills to create new solutions and ensuring product quality, cost and timing targets are met. You will be part of a motivated team that collaborates with Business Partners, Component Suppliers & Production Facilities Globally, developing solutions that achieve world-class levels of performance, quality & reliability.

The key opportunity of this second level engineering position is to move from learning and assisting others to contributing independently.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and document functional requirements and translate into detail design documents.

  • Conduct packaging study and create 3D CAD models using Creo.

  • Research new materials and competitive products.

  • Drafting & release of Engineering drawings

  • Conduct risk assessment through effective FMEA & DVP&R generation, hand calculations, tolerance stack up analysis etc.

  • Participate in build analysis and fitting trials.

  • Organise, coordinate, and execute the building, testing, and analysis of components.

  • Assist Supplier Development Engineers and buyers and provide support for APQP & PPAP.

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams like Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, customer facing teams, Mechanical & Performance systems teams, Test facilities to define and execute the test plan etc.

  • Create reports & documentation in support of design reviews, technical authorisation notes, knowledge transfer etc.

  • Lead or participate in design reviews to obtain ‘buy-in’ from the business.

  • Support resolution of manufacturing, NPI & in field issues.

What You Have: Working knowledge of the following.

Computer Aided Design and Engineering :

Ability to review space claims and create 3D CAD models using CREO or other packages. Ability to conduct BOM comparisons and create Engineering drawings as per industry standards.

Analytical Thinking:

Ability to resolve complex problems by breaking it down into small parts and use a systematic approach to solve complex technical problems. Quantify cost, benefit, risks, and chances for success before arriving at a conclusion.

Technical Excellence :

Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles to design and develop a new component or a product. Ability to review project briefs, understand product requirements and constraints to find a solution.

Effective Communications:

Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Project Management:

Ability to plan, control and deliver projects within cost, quality and timing constraints. Should be able to manage their own workload and priorities.

Top Candidates may also have:

  • Product development through the complete cycle including requirements management, design, analysis, test, and production implementation.

  • Experience in the design and development of exhaust systems or IC Engines

  • Experience with APQP process discipline.

  • Collaborating Globally: Able to build networks and achieve positive results with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Additional Information:

Full-time role, up to 10% global travel.
