Independence For The Blind Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) in Pensacola, Florida

Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist- Full Time [Position Summary:

[The Orientation and Mobility Specialist is responsible for providing, in collaboration with the IB programmatic team, consultation and/or direct services to children and adults; teach skills and concepts clients required to function independently and safely in the home, community and school and/or work environment.

  • Provide individualized orientation and mobility evaluation and instruction for the blind or visually impaired.
  • Assist clients to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe, efficient travel within the home, school, workplace, and community.
  • Monitor each client's progress to ensure services and training methods are performed in accordance with ACVREP standards and DBS contractual guidelines.
  • Plan, develop, and coordinate an on-going program evaluation system to determine program effectiveness and make appropriate program improvements.
  • Close client cases as needed. Review client's plans and available services.

  • Teach orientation and mobility skills (in addition to daily living skills as needed alongside CVRT staff) based on assessed needs of clients.
  • Evaluate client's conceptual development and functional skills in the visual, auditory, tactile, balance and kinesthetic senses.
  • Use assessments to develop an individual rehabilitation plan acceptable to client.
  • Enlist client's cooperation to successfully fulfill all aspects of the individual rehabilitation plan.
  • Teach clients, in conjunction with other rehabilitation services staff, how to orient themselves and function in new environments.
  • Schedule and provide client training in the most effective, efficient manner ensuring DBS contractual requirements are met.
  • Prepare timely and accurate records and reports.
