DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will serve as the main point of contact for all safety-related matters concerning field operations, addressing inquiries and concerns effectively. You will proactively align with the Department's safety objectives and implement safety programs aimed at increasing awareness while reducing accidents and injuries. You will provide guidance to highway maintenance crews and garage personnel on safe operational practices. It is essential to ensure that adequate safety measures are established to safeguard both employees and the public through the use of appropriate procedures and equipment. You will lead initiatives to enhance awareness of working conditions and advocate for proactive strategies to avert accidents and injuries. Additionally, you will develop Job Safety Analyses and promote accident prevention efforts, ensuring that necessary resources are available for risk management and coordinating safety promotional activities. Analyzing accident data will be crucial for implementing effective strategies and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, policies, and standards. You will also be responsible for enforcing national health and safety standards, maintaining an emergency response plan, and ensuring adherence to various regulations. Observing maintenance operations to identify hazards and recommending preventive measures will be part of your duties. You will play a vital role in cultivating a safe work environment through Quality Assurance inspections, daily safety discussions, and clear communication regarding safety procedures and the use of protective equipment. Regular field visits, both scheduled and unscheduled, will be conducted to assess safety practices and recommend improvements, alongside performing routine safety inspections of crews, stockpiles, and county garages to ensure compliance with departmental standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, at supervisors discretion. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • This position may be eligible for alternate work schedule (AWS)

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Safety Specialist 1 (commonwealth title); or

  • One year of professional experience in conducting safety inspections, safety investigations, or safety training; or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Special Requirement:

  • You must obtain an active Advanced Safety Certificate issued by the National Safety Council’s Safety Training Institute within two years of starting in this job.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid PA Class C drivers license.
