National Park Service Maintenance Mechanic in Peninsula, Ohio
Summary The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee. Responsibilities As a Maintenance Mechanic you will: Perform general plumbing maintenance, such as maintaining plumbing to kitchen and bathroom fixtures and sprinkler systems and fuel supply pipe systems to buildings and residences. Perform general carpentry work, such as repairing, constructing, installing, and replacing doors, shelves, windows, trim, cabinets, shelves, shutters to buildings and inside of residences. Perform general HVAC work including repairing, replacing, and cleaning of HVAC systems in housing and buildings. Perform general painting, masonry work, roofing etc. Utilize a variety of materials, tools and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and grounds. Maintain, construct, repair, and alters a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone. Performs maintenance, repair, restoration and stabilization of cultural resources. Restore, stabilize, or repair floors of brick, or stone Area Information Cuyahoga Valley National Park encompasses 33,000 acres along the banks of the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron in northeast Ohio. The park's mission is to preserve and protect the historic, scenic, natural, and recreational values of the Cuyahoga River Valley for public use and enjoyment. The Park is dominated by deciduous forest but also supports meadows, wetlands, streams and agriculture. Summers are moderately warm with average temperatures in the 70's. Winters are moderately cold with average temperatures in the 20's and 30's. Heavy snowfall is common during winter months. Excellent recreational and educational opportunities are available in the area, including hiking and biking trails, numerous restaurants and theaters, nearby shopping, and a variety of universities and colleges. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. You will be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation with childcare inquiries. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Occupancy of government quarters may be available. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to Do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Additional Information This position is concurrently open to all U.S. citizens under Announcement Number NPS-IRA-25-12656838-DE. This is a Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Cuyahoga Valley National Park is from January through December but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
