GKN Fokker Elmo is a leading company in design, manufacturing and support of Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS) for Aerospace and Defense programs. Our tools and processes support our customer's in the development of EWIS. Working primarily at Fokker Elmo in Papendrecht – The Netherlands, or abroad at the customer (depending on the opportunity), we offer a challenging start of your career within an international environment in which we use state-of-the-art technology in an organization with a unique history in the field of aerospace. Fokker Elmo Engineering plays a major role in EWIS aircraft design and development projects, such as the F-35 Lightning II (JSF), Airbus A220, A320NEO, A330NEO, Boeing 787, and numerous aircraft engine programs, such as the P&WC Geared TurboFan engine applications (A220, A320NEO, Gulfstream G500/ 600, Dassault F6X, Embraer 170E2/ 190E2, etc.). New EWIS development are rapidly coming up, with the focus on more sustainable and electrical solutions and the expected change in travel behavior. In line with this trend, we are participation in new programs, such as the new (hybrid) electrical aircraft and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles (Lilium, Supernal and Vertical).

Job Responsibilities

As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for the execution of the functional design of electrical wiring interconnections, i.e. EWIS (Electrical Wiring Interconnect System). This involves providing technical expertise/input and validation to technical solutions and compliance documentation to multiple projects. Ensuring they are compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and configuration management requirements, within agreed program, schedule, and manufacturing constraints. Identify and assess technical risk and propose mitigations relevant to multiple assigned programs/projects. Review and sign as appropriate the assigned project deliverables, documents, and reports as required within limits of signature authorizations. Mentor and development of engineers within assigned programs. Identify improvements and check and/or approve work instructions, procedures, technical manuals, and guidelines. All together focusing on time, cost and quality of tools, products and processes.

This role will report to the Centre of Competence Manager – EWIS Functional Design (EFD), but will take guidance and direction on a day-to-day basis from an Engineering Team Lead (Work Package manager) or Chief Engineer within the applicable design and development project. The place of work will be at GKN Fokker Elmo in Papendrecht, unless otherwise specified. Below qualifications apply for this position:

Job Qualifications

Profile:

  • Bachelor (or Master) degree in Electrical or Aerospace engineering

  • EWIS subject matter expert

  • Technical leadership

Understanding of:

  • In-depth EWIS design processes, methods & standards

  • EWIS source (input) and product definition (output) data

  • Methods, processes or tools to automate data handling

  • Requirements validation

  • (International) drawing standards and methods

  • System design (components, constructions, schematics, wiring diagrams)

  • Wiring harness functional design

  • Integration aspects of design

  • Design verification (reporting of deviations)

  • Configuration management principles

Fundamental knowledge of:

  • Aircraft and systems

  • Environmental conditions in aircraft

  • Interconnection systems

  • Basics of electronics and mechanics

Experience:

  • Minimal 10 years of relevant experience in EWIS for the Aerospace industry

  • Electrical design software (for Aerospace applications)

  • MS office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio), specifically advanced knowledge of Excel is key

  • Automation programming language(s), such as VBA, Python or similar

Soft skills:

  • Judgement: The extent to which someone can form an opinion, after careful consideration based on research of the available data.

  • Analytical: The extent to which someone approaches a situation from a broad perspective, identifies key information and then organizes logically in major and minor issues.

  • Teamwork: Able to work constructively in a team taking responsibility for assigned tasks and willing to support other team members in achieving team targets and deadlines

  • Pursuasive powers: The extent to which someone is able to influence the attitudes and opinions of others through expertise, communication skills and personal presentation, in order to obtain approval for proposals, plans and ideas.

  • Communication: Fluent English (with Dutch as a plus) in speech and writing, ability to communicate clearly and concisely (including technical reports) with a reasonable amount of flair / forthcomingness both internally as externally (suppliers & customers)

  • Mentoring: Demonstrates strong coaching & technical knowledge transfer as part of day to day activities
