A Brief Overview

Embeds and cuts a wide variety of surgical and research tissue, including autopsy specimens, tiny biopsies, lymph nodes, breast tissue and bone marrow. Sections paraffin embedded tissue at 1-7 microns and mounts on microscope slides. Performs a variety of staining techniques, including immunohistochemical procedures, for microscopic evaluation. A senior histotechnologist independently plans and completes daily work, resolving most technical problems that arise, and interprets policy in terms of established objectives and procedures. Provides advice and guidance to staff histotechnologists and laboratory assistants and technicians. May be assigned to the Neuropathology Laboratory, Dermatology Clinic (technical assistance for Moh's procedures) or Gross Room as required. Responsible for daily operation in absence of Histology Supervisor.

What you will do

  • Assists in training other histotechnologists, lab assistants and technicians

  • Assumes responsibility for laboratory technical results

  • Assumes supervisory duties as needed

  • Cut 75-100 blocks per day while maintaining a high quality product

  • Cut high quality 1-3 micron sections of small and difficult biopsy specimens

  • Demonstrates an ability and willingness to assume independent responsibility

  • Maintains cooperative and professional attitude in when interacting with others both inter- and intradepartmentally

  • Must comply with all applicable health and safety policies

  • Perform quality control on sections and staining procedures to ensure a high quality finished product

  • Perform routine H&E stains as well as special stains such as Warthin Starry, Dieterele, and

  • Immunoperoxidase

  • Perform STAT GMS stains and heart biopsies

  • Performs complex and unusual procedures requiring knowledge and skills gained through experience

  • Performs other duties as requested.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Experience Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

  • Ability operate and maintain medical equipment and apparatuses

  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions and interpret results

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions

  • Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to technological changes in the laboratory

  • Ability to organize and prioritize specimens and tasks to produce a high quality product in an efficient and timely manner

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities

  • Ability to perform tasks according to prescribed procedures

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to work in a fast paced work environment

  • Knowledge and technical proficiency in specialty areas assigned within the laboratory

  • Knowledge of infection prevention policies and procedures

  • Knowledge of mathematics general science and laboratory techniques

  • Knowledge of methods of fixing, cutting, and embedding tissue sections

  • Knowledge of staining procedures and mounting sections for microscopic examination

  • HTL-ASCP Histotechnologist Certf-ASCP or

  • HTN-ASCP Histotechnician Certf-ASCP

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $57.67 - $64.95 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
