A Brief Overview
The Director of Pharmacy Supply Chain, including Purchasing, Inventory Management, and Drug Shortage, supports high-quality and safe medication use across Stanford Health Care settings, ensuring state and federal compliance regarding medication use. The role provides strategic direction and guidance for pharmaceutical procurement and supply chain. It also supports shortage management and drug procurement, being accountable for staff, services provided, and the level of performance within assigned areas.

What you will do
Leadership and Staff Management• Actively contribute to the planning and achievement of annual departmental objectives by coordinating assigned objectives and assisting within assigned areas through constant evaluation and innovation.• In partnership with departmental management, recruit, hire, train, develop schedules, and supervise assigned staff. Develop performance standards and conduct performance appraisals.• Prepare, revise, and interpret policies and procedures for pharmacy personnel and ensure compliance.• Perform HR responsibilities for staff, which include interviewing and selecting new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.• Creation and maintenance of a healthy work environment. A healthy work environment is one where people feel supported, held accountable, where standards are applied, and expectations are clear.• Being engaged in the department, including managing up, owning team decisions, and communicating and supporting departmental and/or organizational initiatives.
Operations and Budget Management• Prepare, monitor, and operate within the departmental budget for operations, personnel, and capital equipment, and prepare variance reports as required.• Manage pharmacy services in a cost-effective manner, including planning for new services, day-to-day operations, continuously improving services to meet customer needs, ensuring adequate resources are available, and integrating services with other professional services within and outside the hospital to ensure continuity of care.• Work with the pharmacy business team to develop, recommend, strategize, and execute operating and capital budgets and controls.• Design and implement supply chain practices that support business strategies adapted to changing market conditions, new business opportunities, or cost reduction strategies.• May partner with other pharmacy stakeholders to provide detailed and comparable drug cost information to inform strategic decisions.
Medication Management and Safety• Ensure appropriate handling of medications and documentation by assigned staff. Develop and implement improved procedures to prevent and/or minimize medication errors.• Coordinate medication management processes and services in assigned areas with other departments and external agencies to facilitate smooth continuity of care.• Oversee medication needs for clinics via the SU-13 process.• Oversee and support pharmacy contracting efforts to maximize cost savings, GPO contract compliance, and various state and federal compliance guidelines.
Procurement, Inventory, and Supply Chain Management• Provide daily leadership for all levels of pharmaceutical procurement and purchasing to ensure effective and efficient operations.• Support medical school and clinic needs by ensuring proper medication procurement, availability, and compliance with institutional standards.• Direct, oversee, and provide guidance to SHC pharmaceutical supply chain services, with a focus on purchasing, inventory control, and shortage management.• Partner with pharmacy operations leaders to ensure inventory availability for patient care while optimizing inventory costs.• Work with the 340B team to optimize pharmacy services, including enhancement, cost savings, compliance, and revenue generation.• Work with the Drug Utilization team to provide guidance and strategy on shortage management.• Support and lead automation efforts to improve inventory control and shortage management experience.• Collaborate with Material Management for non-pharmaceutical supplies to ensure seamless procurement and availability.
Strategic Initiatives and Continuous Improvement• Support the development of dashboards and maintain metrics to benchmark effectiveness, using those metrics as motivation for continuous process improvement.• Collaborate in the development of system-wide pharmacy critical initiatives, with a focus on developing and implementing novel system-wide programs to reduce spend on high-cost, high-value drugs, standardizing NDC purchases, and reducing waste across the system.• Lead and/or participate in pharmacy-related business development opportunities.• Lead and direct the team to optimize the customer experience for acute care, oncology service line, ambulatory, and other hospital and non-hospital-based clinics.• Support and fulfill internal customer needs (inpatient and outpatient, IDS, Specialty, and 340B contract pharmacy) to provide superior patient care.
Regulatory Compliance and Reporting• Compile, maintain, and interpret records, statistical and financial reports for assigned areas.• Prepare and revise policies and procedures in areas of responsibility. Implement approved changes. Interpret health system and departmental policies and procedures for pharmacy personnel and ensure compliance.• Knowledge of and adherence to all policies and procedures of the organization and department.• Represent the department at assigned health system events.
Education Qualifications
Bachelor of Pharmacy or PharmD from an accredited college/university required
Master’s, MBA, or other advanced degree desired.
Experience Qualifications
Seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience in Pharmacy required.
Advanced Pharmacy Residency experience OR five (5) years of progressive supervisory responsibility in hospital setting, strongly desired.
Pharmaceutical purchasing, inventory management, and shortage management experience strongly desired.
Experience with 340B, GPO compliance, automation, Pharmacy operation and clinical experience, and/or experience in integrated healthcare systems preferred.

Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility.
Knowledge of reimbursement systems and expertise in the ongoing quality improvement of medication use systems and pharmacy practices.
Strong communication and negotiating skills.
Ability to organize workload, set priorities, and adapt well to fast-paced environments.
Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
Strong customer service skills and the ability to mediate and resolve complex problems and issues.
Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal, and personnel management.
Proficiency in Microsoft programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and web browsers.
Licenses and Certifications
- RPH - Registered Pharmacist; if not registered in the State of California, must obtain CA registration required within 1 Year

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $91.60 - $121.38 per hour
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
