Summary:

This position is primarily responsible for new hire driver training as well as ongoing driver education.   All areas related to driver and employee education regarding safe practices as they relate to driving and workplace safety are a primary emphasis of the position.    Along with accident investigation and operator retraining and coordination, this role also works closely with senior management, insurers, and risk management advisors to minimize the company's exposure to liability. This includes, but is not limited to fleet safety and workers' compensation and any other areas of risk management as it relates to driver performance.  The position also ensures that all personnel are conversant in the area of workplace safety in order to protect the company's primary assets -- its people, and ensure that the company is not unduly exposed to liability arising from our physical operations.  The Safety Director remains conversant with all federal and state requirements relating to safety compliance to ensure company adherence to prevailing laws and regulations.  This position also ensures that the highest standards of driver performance regarding procedures, company policies, operating economy, customer relations, and safety are attained.  Regular performance evaluations for all operators including ongoing educational programs are key functions of this position.  The Safety director must also have a basic understanding of our driver dispatching system and our overall operation.

 

Ensuring that employees are educated and informed with regard to best practices related to workplace safety with special emphasis on the initial training of driver candidates. The ongoing education and fine-tuning of driver knowledge and performance within the framework of best standards geared to the highest degree of on road safety and performance are intrinsic elements in the application of this role.  This position is the principal facilitator of continuing driver education and training in all relevant aspects of safety and job performance.  Working closely with operations personnel and off-site facility managers to facilitate continuing education for all driver employees, the Manager of Safety and Driver Education ensures that operating safety is a focus of the company's physical operations.  Key also to this role is the oversight and education for all employees relative to workplace safety.

 

Position Responsibilities:

Conducts and or oversees new driver training and administers all aspects of classroom and on-the-road training and provides direct coordination and follow-up with training progress to driver trainers and off-site managers

Recruits and educates driver trainer candidates and mentors for all new hires.

Assists in driver recruitment, interviewing, and selection

Creates and updates effective training materials for new driver orientation and ongoing driver training, including the Route Guide and Training Manual.

Monitors driver performance and ensures through regular ride and road checks and other observation mechanisms that driver personnel are maintaining the highest standards of safe driving, customer safety and security, and professional conduct.

Ensures that Upper Peninsula operators and operations are visited at least semi-annually and that assessments of driver operations are made

Recommends and implements effective safety continuing education and awareness campaigns for all personnel, including driving performance enhancements as well as lifting and wellness education.
