Responsibilities:

  • Conduct various office work to process applications DNR has received to the FREP and RHOSP with the goal of purchasing conservation easements on private forest land across the state.
    • Produce field maps, conservation easement maps, and spatial data in Geographic Information System (GIS) software (ArcGIS Pro) by compiling and analyzing GPS data gathered in the field and spatial data created by DNR or other agencies.
    • Conduct research, compile data, and write reports to describe the conditions of the timber stand at the time of the site visit, the resources protected by the conservation easement, and the attributes of the surrounding property for each application.
    • Use data gathered in the field to create a comprehensive description of the timber stands and surrounding property including pictures, notes, GPS data, basic tree measurements, and information about the surrounding natural resources.
    • Create maps and descriptions of the timber stand units and surrounding property in enough detail for a timber cruiser to design and implement a cruise.
    • Calculate the value of conservation easements by interpreting forest practice rules, analyzing timber harvest receipts from the applicant, accessing timber market information from the WA Department of Revenue, and interpreting timber cruise report information.
  • Plan and perform field work on private forest land whose owners have applied to the FREP or the RHOSP.
    • Identify and determine protected natural resources as shown in forest practices applications and observed in the field.
    • Measure buffers on protected natural resources, determine and mark qualifying timber, and gather data such as GPS points, pictures, tree species, understory plants, site conditions, and basic forest measurements.
    • Assist with timber cruises of the proposed conservation easements by helping a forest check cruiser set up plots, take basic tree measurements or record notes.
  • Provide advice to landowners regarding documents needed to process their application and how the easement impacts future land management activities.
  • Explain how the conservation easements are valued and determine the accuracy of timber harvest receipts or reimbursement requests submitted by the program applicants.
  • Conduct compliance reviews of previously purchased conservation easements.

Required Qualifications:

An Associate's degree in forestry, natural resource science/management, or a closely related field; OR two years of forestry experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Experience working in managed forest land, laying out timber harvest units and buffers on protected resources (streams, wetlands, etc.), or successful completion of college forestry courses that provided exposure to timber harvest layout tasks.

Experience creating maps and spatial data using ArcGIS Pro, or successful completion of college course(s) that required creating maps and spatial data using ArcGIS Pro.

Experience with forest management theory and practices.

Experience providing technical information to a wide variety of audiences.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience using Microsoft Office software.
