Please Note: This positioncan be worked on-site in Oak Ridge, TN or remotely. This position starts as a 2-3 month contract role.

JOB OVERVIEW

Xcel Engineering is seeking a UI/UX Developer to join our team of talented and diverse individuals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leadership:

  • Create a strategy for measuring and improving the quality and consistency of user experience with information systems.
  • Create and execute a plan to implement that strategy.
  • Create staff's yearly performance and development plans, improvement plans (as needed), and conduct year-end assessments.
  • Meet with staff and program managers to understand current projects and roadblocks.
  • Assist in removing any roadblocks (may require escalation).
  • Track attendance and approve staff time reporting.
  • Hire/contract for additional staff necessary to support projects.
  • Provide reports as requested on staff delivery and project status.
  • Serve as the point of contact for lab clients interested in user experience services.

Technical:

  • Provide senior level design services and set the direction of design system, component libraries, and other team deliverables.
  • Support UX professionals in UI design, user-centered research, heuristic analysis, cognitive analysis, user analysis, and the recommendations that emanate from those activities.
  • Provide Agile process management and continuously improve the team's process.
  • Define user experience services delivered, define the procedure for delivering those services, supervise the delivery of the services, and personally provide those services where appropriate.
  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • US Citizen with eligibility to obtain a security clearance.
  • A bachelor's degree in information science or related discipline and 5 years of experience in information technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead (projects, teams, etc.).
  • Experience with user experience research and analysis, information architecture, and user interface design.
  • Project planning and management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for communication with customers, management, and staff.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Software Development Lifecycles and Agile processes
  • Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g) certification.
  • Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
  • Experience with UX in the context of enterprise applications in a specialized domain such as scientific research.
  • Knowledge of human cognition, ethical design and strategy, and digital accessibility.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Inside office environment.
  • Working on a computer for long periods of time.
  • May involve long period of sitting at a desk.
  • The work environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures.
