Baffinland Iron Mine Environmental Coordinator in NU, Canada

Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, the Environmental Coordinator works closely with Environmental Technicians and Reporting Specialists in a leadership role to oversee site activities and provide advice and assurance with respect to environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance. This role involves managing resources and logistics to execute various environmental monitoring as required under Baffinland’s environmental management system.

Main Accountabilities

  1. Assuming a leadership role in environmental management and instilling sustainable development values in employees of the Company, Partners, and Contractors through mentoring, teaching, and operations management.

  2. Administrating and managing logistics and resources associated with environmental monitoring program execution within allocated budgets, including truck, snowmobile, boat and helicopter field programs.

  3. Supporting the preparation and management of annual operating programs and budgets for environmental monitoring programs, including programs developed in support of mine permitting.

  4. Assuming a key supervisory role for Environmental Technicians, contractual staff and consultants.

  5. Delivering staff environmental training/ orientation/ awareness for conducting fieldwork, sampling, inspections, equipment use and other environmental monitoring requirements.

  6. Addressing environmental concerns by identifying short-term and long-range issues and recommending options and courses of actions to monitor the company’s activities and obligations with respect to regulatory requirements, good corporate practice and commitments.

  7. Undertaking field monitoring and supporting external reporting as required under existing permits, licenses and Baffinland’s environmental management system.

  8. Reviewing field monitoring and lab results data and implementing required corrective actions, follow-up monitoring or training to instill continuous improvement and adherence to applicable permits, licenses or regulations.

  9. Evaluating, planning and improving environmental monitoring programs with procedural and/or equipment improvements.

  10. Taking on the role of Acting Environmental Superintendent from time to time at the request of the Environmental Manager.

Main Qualifications

  • College diploma/ University degree in environmental monitoring, environmental sciences, biology or other environmental related field is required

  • Valid Provincial or Territorial driver’s licenseis required

  • Fire Arms Certificate (FAC) or Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) is an asset

  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is an asset

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience ina supervisory role in mining, construction or oil and gas within the environmental discipline

  • Experience with EQuIS (Earth Soft) environmental database software

  • Experience with environmental monitoring field activities (surface water, soil, groundwater)

  • Experience operating outboard motors, boats, snowmobiles, GPS and water sampling equipmentNorthern/ Arctic experience, experience working in inclement weather for extended durations

  • Knowledge of current environmental mining legislation (Territorial and Federal)

  • Proficient with standard office software such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
