Job Description Summary
Your role as the Lead Naval Systems Engineer will be part of the multi-disciplined engineering team, that sits within the global naval engineering organisation and will execute technical naval projects of world class power conversion and automation / control to ensure the design meets customer, budget, schedule, contract, and regulatory requirements.
In this capacity, you will be the focal point to provide technical leadership on projects for the Naval business in Australia. Working alongside project management teams, you will lead and coordinate with manufacturers, designers, and the wider engineering team to meet project objectives (quality, cost, delivery, etc.) as well as provide technical guidance and advice to customers. You will also be instrumental in identifying and implementing improvements on processes, tools, and system solutions.
Technical experience within marine, power or utility will be useful when anticipating the needs of customers by providing practical solutions to achieve customer satisfaction. Defence project experience is preferred but not essential.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
Execute design, analysis, or evaluation of projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
Produce designs, specifications and documentation for electrical power and propulsion systems and supporting equipment, including generators, switchboards, transformers, converters, motors, energy storage, cabling etc.
Document technical data and ensure consistency with company engineering policies and procedures.
Ensure that all scope of supply complies with the relevant health & safety and applicable to the project, including international standards and class society rules.
Review technical drawings, documents and electrical schematics for technical compliance and functionality.
Liaise with other GE businesses, sub-contractors, and suppliers as appropriate in order to support projects and the business.
Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments, including updates at engineering forums to identify and forward plan resourcing.
Participate in teams assigned to address organisational initiatives and generic issues.
Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
Assure proper documentation of engineering artefacts generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
Collaborate across the business functions including, sales and ComOps for sales support with providing technical assistance to tendering
Qualifications / Requirements
Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college / university in Electrical Engineering or Electronic or Instrumentation Engineering.
Experience in Royal Australian Navy projects and HMAS Platforms – Defence System Engineering experience is desirable.
Experience in Defence Contract delivery is desirable.
At least 5 to 10 years’ experience in a similar role within power, utilities, offshore oil and gas and/or marine sectors.
Excellent communication skills, to manage and influence internal and external stakeholders.
Technical knowledge on Power Conversion equipment, including generators, switchboards, transformers, converters, motors, energy storage, cabling etc.
Experience in design engineering, field engineering, manufacturing, shop assembly or spares/ replacement parts involvement.
Ability to read and write technical specifications.
Excellence in Customer Service
Commercial awareness
Ability and willingness to travel as required – domestic and international.
Due to nature of projects, there is a requirement to hold Australian Citizenship and be eligible for a Defence Security Clearance.
Desired Characteristics
Electrical Engineering in Naval Marine or Defence industry, or an understanding of Systems Engineering-driven projects.
Application experience with drives, including Naval Marine applications.
Experience in the design, development, or maintenance of control system software.
Experience with marine electrical power and propulsion systems.
Experience in interpreting power system design output such as: SLDs, LV & MV Protection & Co-ordination / Voltage Drop / Dip Calculations / Load Flow and Fault Studies / Transient System and scenario analysis / Harmonic (VTHD) calculations / MV & LV power system cabling (cable selection, rating etc.) / Quality of Power Supply / EMC.
Ability to multi-task and prioritise on a variety of projects to strict time scales, always with professionalism and integrity.
