Job Description

This position is for an experienced Engineering Technician who will be working as a part of Ship Safety Officer (SSO) team during an engineering overhaul of naval submarines. Candidate should have experience as Ship Safety Watch and have thorough knowledge and understanding of Submarine 6010 Ship Safety and Submarine Watertight Integrity requirements. This position will be located in Newport News, VA.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

AA or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years of related experience, or HS + 5 years related (DoD/USN) experience.

  • Must have a strong submarine ship system knowledge and ship system interrelationship understanding to be able to decipher work descriptions, tag-outs and testing on work control documents in relation to making determinations as to their effect upon Ship Safety.

  • Must be able to direct, manage and safely conduct all required Ship Safety evolutions in support of: maintaining ship conditions, high risk evolutions and the prevention and control of fire and flooding casualties while the submarine is waterborne or in dry dock.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate orally with both internal and external customers to include: Commanding Officer, Ship Duty Officer, Project Construction Management, Trades, Test Engineering, Engineering, SUPSHIPNN, and Ship’s Force.

  • Must have above average writing skills in support of preparation of the Ship Plan of the Day, Ship Safety procedures, and both internal and external audit finding responses applying the Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual (JFMM)/Tag-out User’s Manual (TUM) requirements to systems maintenance and testing in a depot level maintenance availability.

  • Must be US citizen

  • Must have Secret Security clearance.

Physical Requirements

Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the job. A waterfront office work environment is normally encountered.
