Description of Duties:
Under the direction of the Forest Property Manager the Forest Property Technician 1 will perform professional forestry work to support the management, development and protection of the College's Northern Forest Properties. The Forest Property Technician 1 will be based out of the SUNY ESF Newcomb Campus with frequent travel to the Warrensburg, Wanakena and Cranberry Lake campuses. The Forest Property Technician 1 will also have the opportunity to work remotely at times. Periodic assistance on the Colleges Southern Forest Properties may also be required.
The Forest Property Technician 1 will be instrumental in a wide range of projects, some of which include:
Administering timber sales in support of academic and research programs - this includes timber sale contract supervision and the marking of stands for harvest and silvicultural improvement
Conducting forest management planning - completing forest inventories, maintaining stand and property records, writing reports as appropriate
GIS data collection, management and analysis
Property boundary maintenance
Assisting with teaching and demonstration programs on forest management and ecology
Assisting researchers in establishing site work
Supervising technical staff, students and crews
Invasive species detection and management
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
AAS in Forest Technology and 2 years of professional forest management
Ability to work independently in a remote setting with rugged terrain, potentially strenuous conditions and inclement weather
Must be able to effectively work as a team player with a variety of other programs and individuals
Strong computer skills, introductory GIS experience
Effective communication skills - both verbal and written
Preferred Qualifications:
B.S. in Forest Resources Management or similar program
SAF Candidate Certified Forester or SAF Certified Forester, or the ability to become an SAF Certified Forester within several years
Experience using ArcGIS Pro and Field Maps
Experience with digital forest inventory collection software
Familiar with regional forestry practices and the Adirondack landscape
Experience with basic chainsaw operation
Ability to learn about building maintenance and heavy equipment operation
New York State Certified Pesticide Applicator's license
