New York Times Senior Software Engineer, Digital Advertising in New York, New York

About the Role:

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Data Ad Products team in our Digital Advertising group. The Data Ad Products team is an engine within The New York Times Advertising (https://advertising.nytimes.com/) business which leverages machine learning and AI to develop audience segmentation and targeting systems. These systems are integrated across The New York Times portfolio (News, Games, Cooking, Audio, Wirecutter, and The Athletic) as part of our powerful First Party Data program (https://open.nytimes.com/to-serve-better-ads-we-built-our-own-data-program-c5e039bf247b) .

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Engineering Manager, Data Ad Products.

What You'll Do:

  • Build reliable, scalable, maintainable, and cost-efficient backend systems and datasets on modern cloud platforms.

  • Lead the design, deployment, and production operation of large features and complete systems.

  • Work with data scientists, data analysts, product managers and other professionals within your team and across the organization.

  • Contribute to the strength of the team by collaborating on system design and documentation, providing clear and actionable technical feedback, and joining hiring panels for adding new people to the team.

  • Participate in an engineering culture which values diversity, community, learning, and continuous improvement.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of full-time software engineering experience using Go, Python, or Java.

  • 3+ years of experience with system design and architecture.

  • Proficiency in building microservices on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

  • Proficiency in data modeling and working with SQL, cloud data warehouses, and non-relational database systems.

  • Experience in collaborative work with platform teams, operations and security teams, and adjacent product teams in an Agile software development environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with machine learning technologies, such as TensorFlow, Vertex, and OpenAI.

  • Experience with containerization technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Experience with CI/CD systems such as Drone or Jenkins and observability tools like Datadog.

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$140,000 — $155,000 USD
