Senior Director, Academic Training

Education Institute

Full-Time on site during initial employment period

The Senior Director, Academic Training (Sr Dir, AT) is responsible for the fiscal and administrative operations, leadership, and management of Medical Education office for the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). The Academic Training office supports graduate medical education (GME) programs and undergraduate medical education (UME) programs at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) main campus and assigned satellite locations. The Sr Dir, AT works with the Senior Vice President of the Education Institute/Designated Institutional Official, Vice President of the Education Institute, the Assistant Vice President of Academic Training & Enterprise Credentialing and Academic Promotions & Medical Education (AVP, AT & ECAP), clinical leadership, administrative leadership, and external Medical Education Offices and Medical Schools to resolve complex issues and make business decisions for the training programs at HSS. The Sr Dir, AT is responsible for maintaining oversight of the accreditation process for each individual specialty program as well as the institutional accreditation for HSS. In addition to accreditation matters, the role exists to direct the administrative operations and maintain appropriate oversight and daily management of all medical education programs, which may also include undergraduate medical education at the defined facility.

The position is expected to be a thought leader for Medical Education, building best practices to support the expansion and organization of all HSS Medical Education programs and endeavors. The Sr Dir, AT will be a primary liaison with New York Presbyterian and other local health systems in establishing and promoting GME in the region and ensuring all contractual relationships are upheld in the highest standards.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures ongoing accreditation compliance with the ACGME Institutional and Common Program Requirements, requirements of any clinical sub-specialty boards (such as AAOS), and other regulatory agencies for all accredited HSS GME programs.

  • Ensures ongoing recognition compliance with the ACGME Institutional and Common Program Requirements, requirements of any clinical sub-specialty boards (such as AAOS), and other regulatory agencies for all NST recognized HSS GME programs.

  • Ensures ongoing compliance with the requirements of any clinical sub-specialty boards (such as AAOS), internal policies and procedures, and other regulatory agencies for all non-accredited HSS GME programs.

  • Facilitates ongoing readiness for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Annual Institutional Review by assisting in the submission of executive summaries that include action plans for oversight of and performance monitoring procedures for underperforming programs.

  • Collaborates with HSS Leadership to ensure ongoing readiness and preparation for ACGME CLER visits and processes. Prepares documentation of all HSS activities in the CLER six focus areas, communicates with and educates required participants (HSS Leadership, Program Directors, faculty, and residents/fellows).

  • Recommends and assists with the development and implementation of institutional programs, policies, and procedures, supporting compliance with ACGME requirements; including Core Competencies, Milestones, Assessment Protocols, Clinical Working Environment Conditions, Resident and Fellow Resources, Institutional Policies and Procedures Manual, as well as relevant regulations, standards, policies, and procedures articulated by NYS DOH and DOE, ACGME, ABMS, other regulatory bodies. Makes formal recommendations for improvement based on accreditation requirements for both the institutional and program accreditation.

  • Responds to and supervises preparation of responses to inquiries from internal/external agencies, and facilitates requested reports as required by governing bodies, regulatory agencies, affiliate hospitals and internal departments. Assists the designated institutional official (DIO) in all correspondence with ACGME at the institutional and program levels.

  • Coordinates interactions between administrative departments including Human Resources, Occupational Health, Quality, Legal and Risk Management, Office of Finance, institutional and hospital executive leadership at HSS and affiliated participating institutions.

  • Oversees onboarding and offboarding and all necessary training and orientation logistics for residents/fellows and GME staff. Works closely with HR to coordinate facility orientation for incoming residents/fellows.

  • Participates in the development and management of operating and capital budgets for HSS GME & UME programs, collaborating with Education Institute leadership.

  • Works in conjunction with GME leadership team to create or update affiliation agreements, aggregate agreements, assist program directors with departmental program letters of agreement between multiple institutions/departments, and also addresses legal and financial responsibilities related to residents/fellows, rotators, and medical students.

  • Leads, directs, trains, and coaches GME Accreditation and Education staff, ensuring work assignments align with skills and a balanced workload. Develops and deploys appropriate professional development supports and career ladders.

  • Develops and implements a "best practices in graduate medical education" resource system for HSS.

  • Identifies financial support needed to maintain residency/fellowship programs according to institutional requirements set forth by the ACGME.

  • Other duties as assigned and necessary.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field -Required

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field - Preferred

  • C-TAGME -Preferred

  • PMP or other Project Management Certification -Preferred

    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 7 years of leadership experience in the development, organization, administration, and delivery of educational programs in an academic hospital setting

  • 5 Years of Senior Level Leadership experience (Preferred)

  • Direct experience in the oversight and administration of GME and UME programming (Preferred)

    TECHNICAL SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Minimum Required

  • A comprehensive understanding of ACGME standards/processes and experience with successful accreditation outcomes

  • Familiarity with GME online and reporting systems including NRMP, ERAS, AMA, Freida, GMETrack, IRIS reporting, and SF Match

  • Working knowledge of emerging health care, regulatory, workforce and educational trends that may impact graduate medical education, undergraduate medical education, and academic medicine leadership and best practices

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office programs

  • MedHub Residency Management System(Preferred)

USD $130,000.00/Yr.
