New York Times Post Production Operations Specialist in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York Times Video department is a global leader in original news coverage, multimedia and investigative journalism. The Times’s work bears witness to world events, makes sense of complicated stories and reveals truths that hold the powerful to account. The Video department is looking for a Post Production Operations Specialist to help ensure the department’s technical workflows, resources, tools and technology for producing videos are efficient, up-to-date, and effective for the team’s growing ambitions. You will work closely with video journalists, producers and editors on a daily basis to troubleshoot operational and technical issues as they arise, train them on post-production systems, and assist adoption of new tools.

You are someone with expertise in the technical aspects of media production, a strong knack for problem solving, and experience in a high-pressure, fast-moving digital news video environment. You can work quickly to solve problems in the moment and keep productions moving, while also identifying the root cause and seeking permanent fixes. You need to be an effective communicator, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities at once and work with a wide array of team members. You can translate production problems into technical solutions, and to ensure that new tools or workflows address the highest priority technical gaps and advance our editorial strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the video production teams, taking ownership of troubleshooting and issues that arise around post workflows and video editing software support; Provide training to staff on all video production systems and assist with adoption of new tools

  • Help be liaison between the department and vendors for third-party video software used in the production and post production process

  • Support teams in the field with file delivery, software and hardware issues

  • Help supervise Assistant Video Editors and other assigned team members

  • Handle technical support of live streaming video and all Times’ live video tools, and ongoing communication with NYT engineering teams for any live tool development

  • Make recommendations and identify best practices to improve our post-production workflow and help design and execute roll out plans that ensure buy-in from teams

  • Assist with the Times’s studio operations (from equipment to scheduling to production), inventory of equipment and making recommendations on the Unit’s needs for the year

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience working in world of video production technology or operations

  • Expert in Adobe Premiere and After Effects

  • Must have a strong knack for problem solving and experience in a fast moving, high-pressure digital video environment

  • Must have expertise in the technical aspects of media production and a deep understanding of video post-production software, production equipment and their limitations and costs

  • Must be an expert with all systems for ingesting, transcoding, exporting, uploading, and archiving video

  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver effective training in both in person and remote environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to improvise and work around complex problems to deliver solutions in important moments

  • Experience with editing and/or camera operating is a plus

  • Highly organized with an eye for detail

  • Willingness to work as emergencies arise

  • Experience managing technology systems and ensuring smooth buy-in from highly matrixed organizations

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $109,946.20 and $110,000.00.
