The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.Position SummaryReporting to the Director of Research and Technical Services, the Department of Biological Sciences is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Laboratory Equipment Specialist. Your primary role will be providing preventative maintenance, repair, and support of multi-user laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, water baths, incubators, power supplies, deep freezers, and projectors. To be successful in this role, one must be knowledgeable in electronics, plumbing, and minor carpentry work. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience working with electronics, motors, and soldering.Responsibilities- Proactively maintain, and make repairs on laboratory instruments- Assist with laboratory preparations for instrument installations/relocations- Locate and rectify problems in components of a variety of laboratory equipment- Maintain laboratory standards, equipment, and supplies- Order parts as necessary, consumables, and keep an up-to-date inventory of repair parts- Create and maintain a repair log for all instruments under their supervision- Develop and improve maintenance procedures- Perform shipping-receiving tasks- Support of minor facility items- loading dock support including making deliveries- Troubleshooting of technical issues- Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering with 2 years related experience building or repairing mechanical, electromechanical and/or electronic equipment, or 4 years of experience in field service, military technical training, or vocational-technical certification with an equivalent combination of education and experience- Ability to disassemble and reassemble laboratory instruments containing fragile and/or miniature components and wiring- Knowledge of fluid and gas fittings, valves, and piping systems- Ability to use conventional troubleshooting equipment such as a multimeter and various hand tools- Ability to work independently; ability to anticipate and proactively solve problems- Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds- Ability to lift and move, without assistance, equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis- Able to Interpret schematics/drawings/ service manuals and technical information from manufacturers.Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Columbia University is committed to the hiring of qualified local residents.
