Penguin Random House Design Director, Knopf Cooks (Hybrid) in New York, New York

Job Summary: We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Design Director to join our team. As a Director for Knopf Cooks, you will play a crucial role in the conceptualization and visual execution of our illustrated cookbooks. You will collaborate closely with authors, editors, photographers, and our design team to bring recipes to life through interesting design and layout. The ideal candidate has a passion for food, a keen eye for aesthetics, and the ability to translate culinary concepts into visually stunning and user-friendly cookbook designs. Responsibilities: Liaise with editorial on all aspects of the book from acquisition to initial production. Collaborate with authors and editors to understand the vision and theme of each cookbook. Review mood boards. Works closely with the creative director in our jacket department on all aspects of the process to create bold looks for our cookbooks. Select appropriate typography, imagery, and color schemes that enhance the overall appeal and readability of recipes. Create and/or source illustrations and graphics when appropriate. Hires and supervises freelancers as necessary for projects. Corresponds with photographers about art direction, arranges photo shoots as needed, confers with Editorial on shot list. Work closely with production teams to oversee the printing and proofing process to ensure the final product meets high quality standards. Attend press oks as needed.

Location: While we prefer a NYC-hybrid work arrangement, remote work may be considered for known candidates. In-office presence would be required occasionally for project meetings as needed. Requirements: 7-10 years as cookbook designer or in a similar role, with a strong portfolio showcasing cookbook design projects. Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Solid understanding of typography, layout, color theory. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Excellent and professional communication skills. Detail-oriented with a passion for food and cooking, with a good understanding of culinary terminology and trends. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Excellent knowledge of prepress and print reproduction. Strong ability to work congenially with other teams to create books within budget. Experience supervising and art directing other design team members.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000 and is eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. Applications will be accepted through October 4th.
