POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Camp Director will be responsible for overall Camp operation: ensuring the safety of campers, licensing compliance, tone-setting, communication with parents, camper behavior management, scheduling, and quality of activities, staff evaluations and coordination of transportation..

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure, above all else, campers are safe and well supervised.

  • Recruits, trains, develops, evaluates, recognizes, holds accountable and directs staff and volunteers in assigned areas, in order to ensure safe, high-quality member focused services through innovative program development, evaluations and ongoing staff training. Ensures staff certifications are current and complete. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.

  • Monitors daily operations and ensures compliance/training with all state and local licensing/regulations (including but not limited to YMCA Best Practices, American Camp Association standards and Department of Health policies). Ensures that all procedures are followed and accurate records are maintained.

  • Develop and implement the Staff Orientation schedule and program.

  • Oversee the scheduling of program activities, theme days, and family nights, in conjunction with the Specialists and Counselors.

  • Oversee logistics and schedules for off-site trips.

  • Communicate performance standards, supervise, evaluate and motivate staff including coaching, teaching, modeling, reinforcing and assisting with difficult situations and correcting behavior.

  • Connect with staff, campers and parents, making all feel welcome and included.

  • Review regularly with the Senior Program Director all concerns, priorities, progress, problems, reports and all matters dealing with camp and programs.

  • Identify and report maintenance concerns in a timely fashion.

  • Work in cooperation with all staff and other programs on the property.

  • Attend all staff meetings, special events and training events as scheduled.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Safety:

  • Must attend and complete all required trainings.

  • At all times, uphold camp safety standards. Maintain constant face counts. Will understand and practice risk management and disaster policies and procedures.

  • Help maintain group control and facilitate lunchtime activities.

  • Follow all YMCA, ACA, and NJ/NY Licensing standards and procedures to ensure the safest and best quality camp and to help maintain ACA accreditation.

  • Secure and submit all accident reports, special plans, schedule changes, and evaluations to supervisor when appropriate.

  • Report all immediate concerns to supervisor.

  • Use two methods of discipline with campers to include redirection to appropriate activities and using positive reinforcement to commend good choices.

    DIRECT REPORTS:

  • Waterfront Director, Assistant Camp Director, Specialist, Camp Nurse.

    OTHER DUTIES:

  • Always maintain a professional demeanor, as you are a representative of the YMCA.

  • Wear Camp T-shirt daily.

  • Maintain positive attitude, responsibility and self-motivation. Be punctual and reliable.

  • Create a positive and nurturing learning environment to instill youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum (5) five year’s experience working at a camp or related experience working with children in a leadership capacity.

  • Must be able to independently lead and actively participate in a variety of activities.

  • Experience in supervision.

  • Ability to create and deliver activities.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • First Aid & CPR certifications.

  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid.
