Craven County Government Deputy Sheriff-Civil (Bailiff) (10120) in New Bern, North Carolina

Primary Purpose

  • An employee in this class performs a variety of law enforcement duties to assist in providing security for the courthouse and maintaining order in the court system. Work includes attending court, maintaining security of witnesses and judges, transporting prisoners from holding cell to and from court room, and providing for the needs and comforts of the jury.
  • Employee is periodically exposed to potential hazardous situations which require independent judgment, tact, and firmness to resolve.
  • Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and is supplemented by frequent specific instructions. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lieutenant- Bailiff and is evaluated in terms of adherence to office policies and the effectiveness with which assigned duties are performed.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as court bailiff for District and Superior Court in maintaining order, opening, and recessing court and accompanying inmates to and from court.
  • Provides security for the courthouse and for courtroom participants.
  • Sequesters and provides for the needs and comforts of the jury.
  • Serves criminal want/warrant services and completes arrest sheets containing necessary identification information.
  • Prepares release orders and bond sheets on inmates.
  • Serves subpoenas and appearance bonds.
  • May serve as escort to the Clerks Office.
  • May serve to transport prisoners.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.

Additional Information Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including handcuffs, leg irons, nightsticks, firearms, two-way radios, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work may involve walking, standing, running and physical confrontation.
  • Physical demand requirements are for Medium Work.
