Job Summary

Lead in the planning and development of standards and processes for the engineering/design and construction of HV/EHV/UHV transmission lines. Promote and advance Standards interests in working with internal and external stakeholders.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform Engineering and design work related to the construction and maintenance of transmission lines under moderate to minimal supervision. Duties and responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Develop specifications, guidelines, and standards for transmission line design, structure and foundation design, construction, and maintenance.

  • Develop specifications, guidelines, and testing procedures for all transmission materials.

  • Evaluate and qualify new suppliers for transmission material and suppliers. May include international travel.

  • Work with Supply Chain in managing Transmission material blankets and supplier relationships.

  • Lead initiatives in the development of new technological innovation of transmission applications.

  • Lead in the rollout and implementation of new standards and best practices to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Lead meetings with internal and external groups to facilitate problem solving and to communicate proper use of standards.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives to drive toward efficiency and consistency in transmission line engineering, construction, and maintenance standards.

  • Provide engineering support to the transmission regional teams in the execution of the capital work plan.

  • Advanced knowledge and application of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code), IEEE publications related to transmission material and construction, and other relevant current industry standards.

  • Analyze and solve unique engineering issues related to construction and maintenance. Provide cost estimates for the low cost solution.

  • Perform root-cause analysis of structural, mechanical, and electrical material failures and develop appropriate engineered solutions.

  • Apply electrical engineering principles (e.g., grounding, shielding, line insulation, EMF) in the development of standards.

  • Competence with AutoCAD. Proficiency with Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Technical expertise: possesses technical knowledge acquired from a Bachelors level engineering degree program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); gains familiarity with standards, codes and regulations relevant to the area of assignment; gains familiarity with pertinent equipment, materials, systems and business processes; assists higher level engineers in handling well defined portions of routine problems or analysis.

  • Leadership and work performance: performs work activities as assigned and coached by higher level employees; demonstrates ability to work with others in both supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary; demonstrates willingness and capabilities to assume leadership roles.

  • Planning and organization ability: prepares basic cost estimates using established standards; develops understanding of work flow of routine engineering projects; accomplishes work according to plan and schedule established by higher level employees.

​Minimum Requirements:

Engineer (SG7): ($85,081 - $106,354)

  • Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET; or 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Master’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET .

  • Individuals with a PhD in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico* is encouraged and preferred.ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternative is:

  • (1) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.

Engineer Sr(SG8) $96,110- $124,940

  • Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET* with typically six (6) or more years related engineering experience OR four (4) years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.

  • Capabilities: Adaptability, Work Standards, Execution, Technical and Professional Knowledge, Lives the AEP Values

  • License: Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is required for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.

  • ** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.

Acceptable alternatives are:

(1) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or

(2) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.
