Job Summary:

Vanderbilt Health – Executive Search Team is conducting a national search for an Executive Director, Specialty Pharmacy. Reporting to the Chief Pharmacy Officer.

Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy is a dually accredited, integrated delivery network Health System Specialty Pharmacy serving Vanderbilt University Medical Center patients and VUMC health plan members who are taking specialty medications. The Pharmacy has been recognized with an ASHP Best Practice award and team members have been recognized for distinguished service to the ASHP Specialty Pharmacy Section.

Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy is an integrated, advanced practice health system specialty pharmacy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). We hold dual URAC and ACHC Specialty Pharmacy accreditation as well as the URAC Rare Disease Pharmacy Center of Excellence designation. Our specialty pharmacy experts are located within Vanderbilt clinics to support patients throughout their care journey and provide transparency and personalized help every step of the way. We are committed to excellence in patient care and supporting the healthcare team to ensure that the complex process to access specialty medications is streamlined. Our dedicated VSP Health Outcomes and Research Program improves patient care, measures and expands the value of our practice model, and fosters research training in the ever-evolving field of specialty pharmacy.

The Executive Director is a member of the pharmacy executive team with oversight of clinical, business, and operational areas. Responsibilities include but are not limited to business strategy, professional development of teams, innovative care delivery, program growth and expansion, & achievement of financial and budgetary goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and maintains relationships across all levels of the organization to help optimize all aspects of the medication use process.

  • Participates in the development of strategic goals and objectives in alignment with institutional goals and strategies.

  • Establishes and maintains programs to comply with legal and regulatory standards.

  • Establishes and evaluates standards of performance to ensure safe, effective, and efficient operations.

  • Continually focused on effective and efficient clinical/business operations (including but not limited to clinical services, staff development, compliance, audit/risk management, revenue cycle, procurement/inventory control, data analytics, financial planning/reporting)

  • Able to design, implement, and continually evaluate new programs to drive departmental growth, help ensure maximal clinical outcomes, and continually improve patient/customer satisfaction.

  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends, as well as political and legislative changes relating to 340 B.

  • Responsible for external relationships with manufacturers, payers, accrediting bodies, and others in support of medication access, network access, and ongoing assessment of national practice standards.

  • Prepare annual operating budget for a unit or section, including direct labor, material and supplies, services, equipment maintenance and replacement.

  • Create and exceed service standards utilizing key service dimensions and from knowledge of patient/customer expectations and best practices.

  • Directs, develops, and implements strategic and operational/high-level projects and processes either through independent/highly autonomous work or through the facilitation of work teams to enable the effective and efficient completion of objectives.

  • Oversees management of and ensures development for staff to meet overall objectives in terms of quality, service, and cost effectiveness. Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem. Directs management responsibilities of selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees.

  • Drives department service standards and activities to impact department and/or system score for patient/customer-based satisfaction, through role modeling and fostering accountability. Serves and actively participates in various entity committees as a voice for the department.

  • Develops partnerships and ensures pharmacy services are supporting the needs of all primary customers across and external to the organization, including but not limited to: patients, executives, medical directors, physician groups, nursing, external entities, etc.

  • Maintains integration of specialty pharmacy services throughout the entity to ensure compliance with legal requirements set by federal, state, and local agencies as well as rules and regulations of other accreditation/regulatory agencies that govern the practice of specialty pharmacy.

  • Creates department strategies to achieve financial target and staffing needs, through optimizing productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage, and other areas according to department specifications.

Qualifications:

• Tennessee Pharmacist License

• Pharm.D

• MBA, preferred.

• A minimum of 10 years of Specialty Pharmacy experience, oversight, compliance, and regulatory management with increasing scope of responsibility, in an academic healthcare setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Specialty Pharmacy Certification

• ASHP accredited residency; Specialty Pharmacy preferred.
