Job Title Student Internship (Clinical Teaching)

General Description

This is a clinical teaching position with the SFA Charter School ( SFACS ). Assists teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements with plans to assume control of the class gradually. Works under supervision of a certified teacher.

Job Duties

  1. Follows beginning and ending dates of semester, contract day, and school calendar.

  2. Reviews curriculum to be covered in the course.

  3. Checks out teaching materials from the cooperating teacher.

  4. Formulates long-range plans/assumption of teaching responsibilities.

  5. Obtains a Faculty Handbook and Student Handbook for review of administrative regulations and routines.

  6. Becomes familiar with existing Code of Conduct.

  7. Plans cooperatively for instruction using the planning template provided.

  8. Utilizes variety of teaching materials and strategies in order to determine those which are most appropriate.

  9. Develops and implements procedures for managing the class effectively during instruction, incorporating various groupings and presentation techniques.

  10. Determines the students’ developmental levels and provides commensurate instruction.

  11. Participates in evaluation and documentation of student progress and attendance.

  12. Demonstrates ability to continually assume greater responsibility in conducting the classes.

  13. Assists and observes in classes with time reserved for preparation time when not directly teaching.

  14. Contacts school, cooperating teacher and supervisor if illness prevents attendance.

  15. Becomes involved in the total school program by participating in school assemblies, professional development, planning meetings, PTO meetings, events, performances, parent conferences, etc.

  16. Meets with cooperating teacher separate from class time on a regular basis to review the instruction to date, critique teaching performance, and assist in planning daily lessons for the upcoming week.

  17. Confers with university supervisor on a regular basis.

  18. Completes all requirements specified by the program and clinical teaching handbook.

  19. Observes, if appropriate at the end of the semester, the teaching of other master teachers in the school. Arrangements must be made with the cooperating teacher, university supervisor, the principal, if appropriate, and the teacher to be observed.

  20. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university and SFACS policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of computer applications including spreadsheet and word processing software.

  3. Skill in the use of standard instructional equipment and online resources.

  4. Skill in communicating effectively as appropriate for the intended audience.

  5. Ability to understand and follow instructions.

  6. Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.

  7. Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  8. Ability to be on time and maintain regular attendance.

  9. Ability to model desired behaviors as an example for students.

  10. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.

    Required Qualifications

Eligible and approved by university to complete the final clinical teaching experience required at the end of the educator prep program. Clinical Teaching is the culminating experience where pre-service teachers demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and disposition related to educating kindergarten through fifth grade students.

This clinical experience can be completed by:

· Employment as an Instructional/Educational Assistant (Aide) – an (approximate) 15-16 week semester (approximately 75 days) experience (no fewer than 75 full days; a full day being 100% of the school day).

· This paid clinical teaching position does require 5 days a week/100% of the day during the duration of the clinical teaching experience/contract obligation.

· The school understands that clinical teachers will need to complete the requirements of their university program, which may include time away from campus.

· Clinical teachers must obtain approval to complete clinical teaching in SFACS from their university prior to applying.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Demands

Physical ability to perform job duties, including ability to stand up and sit for more than an hour at a time, lift and carry up to 15 pounds, use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, twist, walk, talk, and hear regularly.

Special Conditions for Eligibility

A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.

This is a security-sensitive position and may be subject to criminal record check.

This is an IT-sensitive position subject to Computer and Network Security policy.
