Introduction

Apptio, an IBM Company, is seeking a Data Scientist II to join our growing AI & Data Science team. In this role, you’ll build and apply cutting-edge machine learning and generative AI models to elevate Apptio’s FinOps and Technology Business Management (TBM) product suite.

We’re looking for someone with strong modeling expertise, solid engineering fundamentals, and a passion for turning raw data into real customer value. Your work will empower the world’s leading enterprises to optimize their cloud and IT spend through smart, predictive, and actionable insights.

Your role and responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of ML models and generative AI capabilities that enhance Apptio’s product offerings

• Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define AI-driven solutions that solve key customer problems

• Architect end-to-end ML workflows, including data ingestion, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, and deployment

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other data scientists and contribute to a high-performing, collaborative team culture

• Translate ambiguous business problems into well-scoped ML projects with clear success metrics

• Stay current with advancements in AI/ML, especially in generative models, NLP, and cloud cost optimization, and assess their applicability to our products

• Promote best practices in model development, reproducibility, monitoring, and responsible AI

Required technical and professional expertise

• Extensive experience in data science or applied machine learning roles, with demonstrated impact in a product environment

• Advanced proficiency in Python, along with libraries such as scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Hugging Face Transformers

• Strong knowledge of ML techniques, statistical modeling, and real-world model deployment

• Experience working with large-scale datasets, structured and unstructured data, and SQL-based systems

• Proven ability to deliver production-grade ML solutions in partnership with software engineering teams

• Exceptional communication skills and ability to present technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred technical and professional experience

• Experience with FinOps, cloud cost management, or enterprise financial/IT systems

• Hands-on experience with generative AI, LLMs, or natural language processing

• Familiarity with MLOps practices and tools (e.g., MLflow, SageMaker, Airflow)

• Experience with Apptio products (e.g., ApptioOne, Cloudability, Targetprocess) is a plus

• Knowledge of data governance, model monitoring, and responsible AI principles
